1. I cast no glance at those we saw,

2. Save one whose path ensured him place
As we rode out to see the lines.

3. Said he, exalting me as bard,
And I hailed him as keen of thought:

4. "Recite me some of what you've wrought
Nor spare your finest, proudest part."

5. I recited then in praise of him
Whose glory time cannot efface -

6. Ja'far the noble, gracious face -
