1. Tell the abstainer in the tavern
And drinking during musical recitals

2. That I went to a learned jurist
A pious scholar of great knowledge

3. Deeply versed in his religion, jurisprudent
Insightful in science and news

4. I asked, "Is wine permissible?" He answered "No,
Except a bubbling liquor that erupts in flames."

5. I asked about prayer, he said it's obligatory
"Pray the prayers and spend nights with liquor as a companion."

6. Gather in yourself the prayers of a full year
And fulfill the obligatory night prayers by day.

7. I asked about fasting, he said "Don't overdo it
And strengthen the breaking of the fast with more breaking."

8. I asked about alms and zakat, he told me
"It's something prepared for the equipment of raiders."

9. I asked about the rites if I make hajj, he told me
"This is superfluous and the utmost waste."

10. "Do not come to Mecca's lands in pilgrim's garb
Even if Mecca were at your door."

11. I said "The tyrants..." He said "Don't fight them
Even if they were near Al-Anbar."

12. "Make peace with them, and take vengeance on their children
If you harbor resentment against the infidels."

13. "And stab with your spear the belly of this one and the back of that
This is the true jihad, so excellent is the reward."

14. I asked, "Should entrusted goods be returned?" He said to me
"Do not return an ounce of a quintar."

15. "Just ensure you're not holding
A debt to the owner of a wineshop."

16. "Return his entrusted goods and his debt to him
And manage that even by selling your loincloth."

17. I said "I intend to remain single, what do you think
Of an unmarried wanderer travelling the lands?"

18. He answered me, "It's good for you to enjoy
A neighbor's wife, and lie with the neighbor's son."

19. He drew near me and said "I must advise you -
Adorn yourself with these traits along with gambling."
