I have mounted and the night has donned its cloak,

قد أغتدي والليل في اعتكاره

1. I have mounted and the night has donned its cloak,
With waves billowing darkly beneath its surface.

١. قَد أَغتَدي وَاللَيلُ في اِعتِكارِهِ
بِأَغضَفٍ يَموجُ في شِوارِهِ

2. Tamed is the fire that flickers in its depths,
Like a green cord gliding through the currents.

٢. مُؤَدَّبٍ ما يُصطَلى بِنارِهِ
كَالوَتَرِ المُخضَرِّ في إِمرارِهِ

3. It climbs up the ridge line of its back
And outstrips the wind in its onward rush.

٣. أَشرَفَ مَتناهُ عَلى فِقارِهِ
يَسبِقُ مَرَّ الريحِ في إِحضارِهِ

4. With the insistence of an obstinate jinni
The howling wasteland echoes its shuddering advance.

٤. في حِسِّ جِنّيٍّ عَلى إِصرارِهِ
سِمعُ فَلاةٍ غَيرَ ما اِقشِعرارِهِ

5. It does not wait for the gazelle to match its stride
Before its claws appear amidst the brush.

٥. لا يُمهِلُ الظَبيَ عَلى أَقدارِهِ
حَتّى يُرى بَينَ شَبا أَظفارِهِ

6. Before the gaze can turn from its passage
It has reached its destination south and home.

٦. قَبلَ رُجوعِ الطَرفِ عَن إِمرارِهِ
مَحَلُّهُ مِن يَمَنٍ وَدارِهِ
