1. Let the boys boast of what they have hunted,
And leave Jarir to jest in his verses.

2. Spare us, we implore, from a maiden inebriate,
A virgin neither married nor plucked.

3. From a wine seller's house she came like
The morning star when dawn breaks.

4. The morning star appeared, and her hands
In the dusk gently inclined.

5. I knocked at a door, called the owner,
Saying: open up, awake!

6. Hurriedly he rose to answer me
And wiped the sleep from his eyes.

7. He brought out wine from its abode,
Its color ruby or brilliant dawn.

8. He poured it in a goblet like drizzle -
He blessed its low price and praised.

9. He recited in reverence the beauty of its surah,
Uttering speech its secret to expound.

10. Drink, said he; I replied: slowly, slowly,
No haste in the cups and the wine won't avail.

11. Call it what you will, I'll not refuse you,
For her price I will be openhanded.
