1. Leave the tavern be, it has no place in you,
And neither has Zainab enchanted me, nor Ka'b.
١. دَعِ الرَبعَ ما لِلرَبعِ فيكَ نَصيبُ
وَما إِن سَبَتني زَينَبٌ وَكَعوبُ
2. Rather, it was Babylon that captivated me,
For she is, like me, accustomed to nights of wakefulness.
٢. وَلَكِن سَبَتني البابِلِيَّةُ إِنَّها
لَمِثلِيَ في طولِ الزَمانِ سَلوبُ
3. The water has dried up within her, for she is
A fantasy that stirs between bones.
٣. جَفا الماءُ عَنها في المِزاجِ لِأَنَّها
خَيالٌ لَها بَينَ العِظامِ دَبيبُ
4. When one tastes her, she ensnares him,
Rendering him senseless, unable to be called cultured.
٤. إِذا ذاقَها مَن ذاقَها حَلَّقَت بِهِ
فَلَيسَ لَهُ عَقلٌ يُعَدُّ أَديبُ
5. On a starless night, I walked with some youths
Whose hearts competed as they strode toward the tavern.
٥. وَلَيلَةِ دَجنٍ قَد سَرَيتُ بِفِتيَةٍ
تُنازِعُها نَحوَ المُدامِ قُلوبُ
6. Toward a wine-seller's house, and below it
Were lofty mansions with paths leading to them.
٦. إِلى بَيتِ خَمّارٍ وَدونَ مَحَلِّهِ
قُصورٌ مُنيفاتٌ لَنا وَدُروبُ
7. Startled by our late-night approach after slumber,
With none present save the arrogant watcher,
٧. فَفُزِّعَ مِن إِدلاجِنا بَعدَ هَجعَةٍ
وَلَيسَ سِوى ذي الكِبرِياءِ رَقيبُ
8. He tossed apprehensively, fearing it was a raid,
And his anxiety returned after his rest.
٨. تَناوَمَ خَوفاً أَن تَكونَ سِعايَةٌ
وَعاوَدَهُ بَعدَ الرِقادِ وَجيبُ
9. When we called his name, terror gripped him,
And he knew the travelers would profit from him.
٩. وَلَمّا دَعَونا بِاسمِهِ طارَ ذُعرُهُ
وَأَيقَنَ أَنَّ الرَحلَ مِنهُ خَصيبُ
10. He hurried to the door, eager to welcome
The visitors ‒ strange is his joy in them!
١٠. وَبادَرَ نَحوَ البابِ سَعياً مُلَبِّياً
لَهُ طَرَبٌ بِالزائِرينَ عَجيبُ
11. He bared his teeth and fell prostrate before us,
Thinking himself, in this, perspicacious.
١١. فَأَطلَقَ عَن نابَيهِ وَانكَبَّ ساجِداً
لَنا وَهوَ فيما قَد يَظُنُّ مُصيبُ
12. "Welcome," he said. "Your arrival gladdens
A company, and with me you have ample lodging."
١٢. وَقالَ اِدخُلوا حُيِّيتُمُ مِن عِصابَةٍ
فَمَنزِلُكُم سَهلٌ لَدَيَّ رَحيبُ
13. He brought a lantern and lit it,
And all that we desired was near for him.
١٣. وَجاءَ بِمِصباحٍ لَهُ فَأَنارَهُ
وَكُلُّ الَّذي يَبغي لَدَيهِ قَريبُ
14. We said, "Give us rest. Sell to us, if selling
Is your trade, for darkness is vanishing from its dominion."
١٤. فَقُلنا أَرِحنا هاتِ إِن كُنتَ بائِعاً
فَإِنَّ الدُجى عَن مُلكِهِ سَيَغيبُ
15. He presented to us a pale honey-colored one,
Full of gaiety in her cup and clothing.
١٥. فَأَبدى لَنا صَهباءَ تَمَّ شَبابُها
لَها مَرَحٌ في كَأسِها وَوُثوبُ
16. When he poured her out to the boon companions,
The scent of delicate fragrant air was manifest to her.
١٦. فَلَمّا جَلاها لِلنَدامى بَدا لَها
نَسيمُ عَبيرٍ ساطِعٍ وَلَحيبُ
17. She came swaying with a blossoming figure.
The onlookers desire her as she sways gently.
١٧. وَجاءَ بِها تَحدو بِها ذاتُ مُزهِرٍ
يَتوقُ إِلَيها الناظِرونَ رَبيبُ
18. She is a dune on which there grows a bending bough.
If she walks, the stone cliffs appear to sway with her.
١٨. كَثيبٌ عَلاهُ غُصنُ بانٍ إِذا مَشى
تَكادُ لَهُ صُمُّ الجِبالِ تُنيبُ
19. The beauty Mahmud approached, sparkling,
Drawn to her cup in which no defect is evident.
١٩. وَأَقبَلَ مَحمودُ الجَمالِ مُقَرطَقٌ
إِلى كَأسِها لا عَيبَ فيهِ أَريبُ
20. The revelers inhale the rose's fragrance from his cheeks ‒
Nothing in it but pleasant redolence.
٢٠. يَشُمُّ النَدامى الوَردَ مِن وَجَناتِهِ
فَلَيسَ بِهِ غَيرُ المِلاحَةِ طيبُ
21. He continued serving us with brimming cups,
One disappears as another after it returns.
٢١. فَمازالَ يَسقينا بِكَأسٍ مُجِدَّةٍ
تُوَلّي وَأُخرى بَعدَ ذاكَ تَؤوبُ
22. He sang for us in a trilling, modulated voice.
Lightning flashed westerly, and a stranger wept.
٢٢. وَغَنّى لَنا صَوتاً بِلَحنٍ مُرَجَّعٍ
سَرى البَرقُ غَربِيّاً فَحَنَّ غَريبُ
23. Whoever among us was a lover, his tears flowed,
And after joy, his laments returned.
٢٣. فَمَن كانَ مِنّا عاشِقاً فاضَ دَمعُهُ
وَعاوَدَهُ بَعدَ السُرورِ نَحيبُ
24. Among the joyous, the weeping lovers,
As the garments of darkness revealed hidden things...
٢٤. فَمِن بَينِ مَسرورٍ وَباكٍ مِنَ الهَوى
وَقَد لاحَ مِن ثَوبِ الظَلامِ غُيوبُ
25. The Pleiades have set, and the Thurayya
With the dawn, begins to rise.
٢٥. وَقَد غابَتِ الشِعرى العَبورُ وَأَقبَلَت
نُجومُ الثُرَيّا بِالصَباحِ تَثوبُ
