أما يفنى حديثك عن جنان

1. Does your talk of Paradise ever cease,
Or spare this tongue of mine no peace?

١. أَما يَفنى حَديثُكَ عَن جِنانِ
وَلا تُبقي عَلى هَذا اللِسانِ

2. "For all time," I complained; but softly she
Replied, "Nay; this too passes, presently."

٢. أَكُلَّ الدَهرِ قُلتُ لَها وَقالَت
فَكَم هَذا أَما هَذا بِفانِ

3. You made all folk seem equal in your eyes
When you described them in your poesies.

٣. جَعَلتَ الناسَ كُلُّهُمُ سَواءٌ
إِذا حَدَّثتَ عَنهُم في البَيانِ

4. Foe was as friend when you declaimed of one;
The far and near were all the same to you.

٤. عَدُوُّكَ كَالصَديقِ وَذا كَهَذا
سَواءٌ وَالأَباعِدُ كَالأَداني

5. When you told tales of anything, its strangeness
Was such, you brought us wonders great and new.

٥. إِذا حَدَّثتَ عَن شَيءٍ فَوَلَّت
عَجائِبُهُ أَتَيتَهُم بِثانِ

6. Had you but masked its name and said instead
'Twas something else, we all had known the clue.

٦. فَلَو عَمَّيتَ عَنها بِاِسمِ أُخرى
عَلِمنا كُلَّنا مَن أَنتَ عانِ
