1. To God belongs all that the gallant steeds accomplish,
And the lances on the day of battle, bright and erect.

2. They quenched their thirst then slew their enemies,
A sun that descended upon them and then moved on.

3. It does not rest at the pasturage it exercises
Nor spend the night on the lute strings it plucks.

ูููุง ุชูุจูุชู ุนููู ุงูุฃููุชุงุฑู ุชูุชูููููู
4. In it is a void from the chalice that occupies it
Distracting it from me while I, because of it, am distracted from all else.

ููู ุงูุณูููุงูู ููุดุบููููุง
ุนูููู ููููููู ุจููุง ุนูู ุบููุฑููุง ุดูุบููู
5. When I become inattentive of it, rigor escorts me
As well as sadness, and in it my fervor is quick.
ูฅ. ุฅูุฐุง ุชูููุจููุซุชู ุนูููุง ุณุงูู ุจู ูููููู
ุจูุฑุญู ููุฃููุฌููููู ููุฌุฏู ุจููุง ุนูุฌููู
6. O most high, verily the sickness of the heart has no remedy
That can cure it, except the beloved who unites with it.
ูฆ. ูุง ุนูููู ุฅูููู ุงูุนุชููุงูู ุงููููุจู ูููุณู ูููู
ุขุณู ููุฏุงูููู ุฅูููุง ุฎููููุฉู ุชูุตููู
7. Are you not but the crooked rib, which passion bends straight?
Or the gazelle in the preserve, which amorousness courts?
ูง. ููู ุฃููุชู ุฅูููุง ููุถูุจู ุงูุจุงูู ุชูุนุทููููู
ู
ูุฑุถู ุงูุฑููุงุญู ููุชูุนุฏููู ููููุนุชูุฏููู
8. Or the doe of the thicket with kohl on its eyes?
How dare I wail in the land of Iraq, having left behind in Damascus
ูจ. ุฃููู ุงูุบูุฒุงููุฉู ูู ุฏูุฌูู ููุบุงุฒููููุง
ุฃูู ุธูุจููุฉู ุงูุจุงูู ูู ุฃูุฌูุงูููุง ููุญููู
9. She, who captures my heart, causing it to languish!
But how can laudation and retirement be seemly for me
ูฉ. ููููู ุงูุชูุตูุฑููุนู ูู ุฃูุฑุถู ุงูุนูุฑุงูู ููููุฏ
ุฎูููููุชู ุจูุงูุดุงู
ู ู
ูู ูููุจู ุจููู ุฎูุจููู
10. While the gray hairs blaze on my temples?
There remains only the moan of the strings, which I hear

ููุดููุจู ุฑูุฃุณู ุนููู ุงููููุฏูููู ู
ูุดุชูุนููู
11. And the drinking companion makes the brimming cup morn me at dawn.
Hasten us to the meadows and sweet basil at daybreak!

ููุงูููุฃุณู ููุตุจูุญููููุง ุงูุดุงุฑูุจู ุงูุซูู

12. For nothing becomes save rushing headlong therein.
And drink to the fortune of al-Mu'tazzโverily for it
ูกูข. ุนุงุฌูู ุจููุง ุงูุฑูุญู ููุงูุฑููุญุงูู ู
ูุจุชูููุฑุงู
ูููููุณู ููุญุณููู ุฅูููุง ููููู
ุง ุงูุนูุฌููู
13. Is a share in beauty for which kingdoms did not prove auspicious.
A caliph who inherits the cloud rains when it pours down;
ูกูฃ. ููุงูุดุฑูุจ ุนููู ุฏููููุฉู ุงูู
ูุนุชูุฒูู ุฅูููู ูููุง
ุญูุธูุงู ู
ููู ุงูุญูุณูู ููู
ุชูุณุนูุฏ ุจููู ุงูุฏููููู
14. Were you to see him adorned, you would say, โthe showers descend.โ
When the majesty of kingship appears, inundating him,
ูกูค. ุฎูููููุฉู ููุฎูููู ุงูุฃูููุงุกู ูุงุฆููููู
ุฅูุฐุง ุชูููููููู ูููุชู ุงูุนุงุฑูุถู ุงูููุทููู
15. You would reckon him the full moon, perfect in beauty.
His kin are an intermediary to God when they take a fourth,
ูกูฅ. ุฅูุฐุง ุจูุฏุง ููุฌููุงูู ุงูู
ูููู ููุบู
ูุฑููู
ุญูุณูุจุชููู ุงูุจูุฏุฑู ููููู ุญูุณูููู ุงูููู
ููู
16. And his ties are connected to the Messenger of God.
The Quraysh yielded the plain of Bat'ha to him and turned
ูกูฆ. ุฑูุจุงุนููู ูู ุฌููุงุฑู ุงููููู ูุงุณูุทูุฉู
ููุญูุจูููู ุจูุฑูุณููู ุงููููู ู
ูุชููุตููู
17. The lowland over to him until the mountain brought him possession.
And they preferred him, though their own merits are not enhanced
ูกูง. ุฎููููุช ููุฑููุดู ูููู ุงูุจูุทุญุงุกู ููุงููุตูุฑูููุช
ูููู ุนููู ุงูุณูููู ุญูุชูู ุญุงุฒููุง ุงูุฌูุจููู
18. Save by preferring a people by whom they themselves were preferred.
O You to whom belong the first and last of the sublime,

ุฅูููุง ุจูุชููุถููู ุฃูููุงู
ู ุจูููู

19. And by whose open hands the example is struck!
You saved us from the disgrace of the borrower when

ูู ูููู ุฃูููููู ุงูุนูููุง ููุขุฎูุฑููุง

ูู ุจูุฌูุฏู ููุฏูููู ููุถุฑูุจู ุงูู
ูุซููู
20. His erring opinion had brought perdition to the lands.
He is the star-crossed one whose rule
ูขู . ุฃููููุฐุชููุง ู
ูู ุฎูุจุงูู ุงูู
ูุณุชูุนุงุฑู ููููุฏ
ุฃููุจุง ุงูุจููุงุฏู ุนูููููุง ุฑูุฃูููู ุงูุฎูุทููู
21. Was an ordeal wherein people perished when they were forsaken.
You deposed him, though he is despised for his unimportance,

ู ุงูููุฐู ูุงููุช ูููุงููุชููู
ุจูููู ุชููุงูููู ูููุง ุงููุงุณู ุฅูุฐ ุฎูุฐูููุง
22. And the violent injustice of al-Hajjaj had barely ended.
He was like the ignorant calf,

ู ุนููู ุตูุบูุฑู

ููููุฏ ููููุฌุงุฌู ุงูุบูููู ูููุนูุฒููู
23. While you were Moses who guided the stray people who were ignorant.
He was like the discarded corpse, and you came just as
ูขูฃ. ูููุงูู ููุงูุนูุฌูู ุบูุฑูู ุงูุฌุงูููููู ุจููู
ูููููุชู ู
ูุณู ููุฏู ุงููููู
ู ุงูุฃููู ุฌูููููุง
24. Action followed the recitation of your words, O Solomon!
So religion in every horizon laughs delighted,

ูููู ููุฌูุฆุชู ููู

ุฌุงุกู ุณููููู
ุงูู ููุชูู ููููููู ุงูุนูู

25. While unbelief in every land cowers in fear.
As for the loyalistsโGodโs troopsโHe charged them
ูขูฅ. ููุงูุฏููู ูู ููููู ุฃูููู ุถุงุญููู ุจูููุฌู
ููุงููููุฑู ูู ููููู ุฃูุฑุถู ุฎุงุฆููู ููุฌููู
26. To support you; thus they carried out what they took on.
Their remaining alive is safekeeping for the world and their might

ูุง ุงูู
ููุงูู ููุฌููุฏู ุงููููู ุญูู
ููููููู
ุฃูู ูููุตูุฑููู ููููุฏ ูุงู
ูุง ุจูู
ุง ุงูุญุชูู

27. Is a screen over nascent Islam, ever draping.
They turned aside disgrace and repented before God

ุนูุตู
ูุฉู ุงูุฏูููุง ููุนูุฒููููู
ู
ุณูุชุฑู ุนููู ุจููุฏูุฉู ุงูุฅูุณูุงู
ู ู
ููุณูุฏููู
28. Of their sin therein and the wrong that they did.
A lapse which was neither unprecedented nor wondrousโ
ูขูจ. ุฑูุฏููุง ุงูู
ูุนุงุฑู ููุชุงุจูุง ู
ูู ุฎูุทูุฆูุชูููู
ูููู ุฅููู ุงููููู ููุงูุฅูุซู
ู ุงูููุฐู ููุนูููุง
29. Prophets of God and messengers have erred.
Who would take the perilous risk which they undertook yesterday
ูขูฉ. ุฎูุทูุฃูุฉู ููู
ุชูููู ุจูุฏุนุงู ูููุง ุนูุฌูุจุงู
ููุฏ ุฃูุฎุทูุฃูุช ุฃููุจููุงุกู ุงููููู ููุงูุฑูุณููู
30. Or sacrifice the aid which they sacrificed?
With ample wealth and lives they struggled for you

ูู ููุฑููุจู ุงูุฎูุทูุฑู ุงูุตูุนุจู ุงูููุฐู ุฑูููุจูุง
ุจูุงูุฃูู
ุณู ุฃูู ููุจุฐููู ุงูููุตุฑู ุงูููุฐู ุจูุฐูููุง
31. While the fires of war blaze.
They plunged into the frayโno swerving or holding backโ
ูฃูก. ููุฏ ุฌุงููุฏูุง ุนูููู ุจูุงูุฃูู
ูุงูู ูุงููุฑูุฉู
ููุจูุงูููููุณู ูููุงุฑู ุงูุญูุฑุจู ุชูุดุชูุนููู
32. And rushed into deathโno bending or withdrawing.
They take up the heels of calamities if they ride,
ูฃูข. ุชูููุฑููุฏูุง ุงููููุนู ูุง ุญููุฏู ูููุง ููุดููู
ููุจุงุดูุฑูุง ุงูู
ููุชู ูุง ู
ูููู ูููุง ุนูุฒููู
33. And their lance points verify death if they descend.
None like their elder in wisdom and experience,
ูฃูฃ. ูููุงุชูุฑููู ุชูุจุงุนู ุงูููุฑูู ุฅูู ุฑูููุจูุง
ููููุตุฏููููู ุฏูุฑุงูู ุงูุทูุนูู ุฅูู ููุฒูููุง
34. Nor like their youthsโ cups when they come to a head.
Three noble onesโif consulted, they advise sincerely;

ูุซูู ุดููุฎูููู
ู ุญูุฒู
ุงู ููุชูุฌุฑูุจูุฉู
ูููุง ููุจูุฃุณู ููุชุงููู
ุญููู ููุนุชูู

35. If aided, they suffice; if given authority, they judge justly.
So entrust to them what dawn brings, adorned,
ูฃูฅ. ุซููุงุซูุฉู ุฌููููุฉู ุฅูู ุดููููุฑูุง ููุตูุญูุง
ุฃููู ุงูุณุชูุนูููุง ูููููุง ุฃูู ุณููููุทูุง ุนูุฏูููุง
36. And let them entrust to you what the mid-morn sends, swift.
