1. O you who are chosen from among the best,
You are not of my night or its conversation.
١. أَيُها المُنتابُ عَن عُفُرِه
لَستَ مِن لَيلي وَلا سَمَرِه
2. I protect the birds from the trees,
And I have tasted the bitter fruit.
٢. أَذودُ الطَيرَ عَن شَجَرٍ
قَد بَلَوتُ المُرَّ مِن ثَمَرِه
3. So join if you are one who joins
With the strength of one whom you are from his scent.
٣. فَاِتَّصِل إِن كُنتَ مُتَّصِلاً
بِقُوى مَن أَنتَ مِن وَطَرِه
4. I fear the oft-repeated talk tomorrow,
And tomorrow brings what is expected.
٤. خُفتُ مَأثورَ الحَديثِ غَداً
وَغَدٌ دانٍ لِمُنتَظِرِه
5. He who travels to an unknown land is lost,
However far his journey.
٥. خابَ مَن أَسرى إِلى بَلَدٍ
غَيرِ مَعلومٍ مَدى سَفَرِه
6. And his two arms are hampered
By an old age that has reached his eyelids.
٦. وَسَّدَتهُ ثِنيَ ساعِدِهِ
سِنَةٌ حَلَّت إِلى شَفرِه
7. So go ahead, do not do me favors
Your kindness to me is from his bitterness.
٧. فَاِمضِ لا تَمنُن عَلَيَّ يَداً
مِنُّكَ المَعروفَ مِن كَدَرِه
8. I have raised many young men
From the place where snakes fall from their burrows.
٨. رُبَّ فِتيانٍ رَبَأتُهُمُ
مَسقِطَ العَيّوقِ مِن سَحَرِه
9. So fear me what makes them doubt,
Indeed, piety is protection from evil.
٩. فَاتَّقوا بي ما يُريبُهُمُ
إِنَّ تَقوى الشَرِّ مِن حَذَرِه
10. A cousin does not confide in us
We have dressed him in his stupidity.
١٠. وَابنُ عَمٍّ لا يُكاشِفُنا
قَد لَبِسناهُ عَلى غَمَرِه
11. How much hatred in him towards us
Like the ember in its stones.
١١. كَمَنِ الشَنآنُ فيهِ لَنا
كَكُمونِ النارِ في حَجَرِه
12. And a milking she-camel whose udder
Quenches the thirsty from its skin.
١٢. وَرُضابٍ بِتُّ أَرشُفُهُ
يَنقَعُ الظَمآنَ مِن خَصَرِه
13. My mount made easy for the rider
Its back bent for the one holding the reins.
١٣. عَلَّنيهِ خوطُ إِسحِلَةٍ
لانَ مَتناهُ لِمُهتَصِرِه
14. This one with dusty cheeks
Eyes avert from his drivel.
١٤. ذا وَمُغبَرٍّ مَخارِمُهُ
تَحسِرُ الأَبصارُ عَن قُطُرِه
15. The discerning eye sees in him
Nothing but cowardice from his cows.
١٥. لا تَرى عَينُ المُبينِ بِهِ
ما خَلا الآجالَ مِن بَقرِه
16. One with a guarded domain plunged me
Into the abundant goodness of his shore.
١٦. خاضَ بي لُجَّيهِ ذو حِرَزٍ
يُفعِمُ الفَضلَينِ مِن ضَفرِه
17. His camel covers itself with foam
So we lead it by its nostril.
١٧. يَكتَسي عُثنونُهُ زَبَداً
فَنَصيلاهُ إِلى نَحرِه
18. Then the pilgrims lose it in the crowds
Like losing chicks among the fluff.
١٨. ثُمَّ يَعتَمُّ الحِجاجُ بِهِ
كَاعتِمامِ الفوفِ في عُشرِه
19. Then the winds scatter it
Like cotton blown off the spindle.
١٩. ثُمَّ تَذروهُ الرِياحُ كَما
طارَ قُطنُ النَدفِ عَن وَتَرِه
20. He fulfilled all my needs
And his strength was not diminished.
٢٠. كُلُّ حاجاتي تَناوَلَها
وَهوَ لَم تَنقُص قُوى أَشَرِه
21. Then he brought me to a king
Where the criminal is safe at his court.
٢١. ثُمَّ أَدناني إِلى مَلِكٍ
يَأمَنُ الجاني لَدى حُجرِه
22. Hands take their injustices
Then seek excuses until sunset.
٢٢. تَأخُذُ الأَيدي مَظالِمَها
ثُمَّ تَستَذري إِلى عُصُرِه
23. How can hopes not bring you close
When the Messenger of God is among his comrades?
٢٣. كَيفَ لا يُدنيكَ مِن أَمَلٍ
مَن رَسولُ اللَهِ مِن نَفَرِه
24. Ask for rain you hope for,
Al-Abbas is enough for you from its rain.
٢٤. فَاسلُ عَن نَوءٍ تُؤَمِّلُهُ
حَسبُكَ العَبّاسُ مِن مَطَرِه
25. A king the like of whom is rare,
No eye has fallen on the like of him.
٢٥. مَلِكٌ قَلَّ الشَبيهُ لَهُ
لَم تَقَع عَينٌ عَلى خِطَرِه
26. No favor is concealed from him
In the open country or its wine.
٢٦. لا تُغَطّى عَنهُ مَكرُمَةٌ
بِرُبى وادٍ وَلا خَمرِه
27. Those rough roads are smoothed for him
As he chooses with his eyesight.
٢٧. ذُلِّلَت تِلكَ الفِجاجُ لَهُ
فَهوَ مُختارٌ عَلى بَصَرِه
28. His guide surpassed negligence,
And the eye sufficed instead of his track.
٢٨. سَبَقَ التَفريطَ رائِدُهُ
وَكَفاهُ العَينَ مِن أَثَرِه
29. And when the battle squeezed in
And death appeared in its forms,
٢٩. وَإِذا مَجَّ القَنا عَلَقاً
وَتَراءى المَوتُ في صُوَرِه
30. He went into the fold of his overflowing
A lion who bloodies the claws of youth.
٣٠. راحَ في ثِنيَي مُفاضَتِهِ
أَسَدٌ يُدمى شَبا ظُفُرِه
31. Birds take their breakfast
Trusting in the plenty from his prey.
٣١. تَتَأَيّا الطَيرُ غُدوَتَهُ
ثِقَةً بِالشَبعِ مِن جَزَرِه
32. And you see the nobility
Of the descendant of the sun from his moons.
٣٢. وَتَرى الساداتِ ماثِلَةً
لِسَليلِ الشَمسِ مِن قَمَرِه
33. So they vary in their guesses,
Wary of the hidden from his thoughts.
٣٣. فَهُمُ شَتّى ظُنونَهُمُ
حَذِرَ المَكنونِ مِن فِكَرِه
34. The generous one from Yemen,
And the generous one from Mudar.
٣٤. وَكَريمُ الخالِ مِن يَمَنٍ
وَكَريمُ العَمِّ مِن مُضَرِه
35. You have worn time like a youth
Who took etiquette from its lessons.
٣٥. قَد لَبِستَ الدَهرَ لِبسَ فَتىً
أَخَذَ الآدابَ عَن عِبَرِه
36. So hoard goodness for which you will be rewarded,
Every hoarded thing is for its hoarder.
٣٦. فَاِدَّخِر خَيراً تُثابُ بِهِ
كُلُّ مَدخورٍ لِمُدَّخِرِه
