1. She wrote on her ring's bezel:
He who loves and then sleeps, may he never rest
١. كَتَبَت عَلى فَصٍّ لِخاتَمِها
مَن مَلَّ مَحبوباً فَلا رَقَدا
2. So I wrote on mine to reach her:
He who sleeps lacks the sense of one awake
٢. فَكَتَبتُ في فَصٍّ لِيَبلُغَها
مَن نامَ لَم يَعقِل كَمَن سَهِدا
3. She erased it and wrote to reach me:
He who loves does not sleep or lie down
٣. فَمَحَتهُ وَاِكتَتَبَت لِيَبلُغَني
لا نامَ مَن يَهوى وَلا هَجَدا
4. I erased mine, then wrote myself:
By God, the first dead was inert
٤. فَمَحَيتُهُ ثُمَّ اِكتَتَبتُ أَنا
وَاللَهِ أَوَّلُ مَيِّتٍ كَمَدا
5. So she erased and wrote to counter me:
By God, I shall never speak to him again
٥. فَمَحَتهُ وَاِكتَتَبَت تُعارِضُني
وَاللَهِ لا كَلَّمتُهُ أَبَدا
