1. I saw Al-Fadl despondent
harassing bread and fish.
١. رَأَيتُ الفَضلَ مُكتَإِباً
يُناغي الخُبزَ وَالسَمَكا
2. He frowned when he saw me,
bowed his head and wept.
٢. فَقَطَّبَ حينَ أَبصَرَني
وَنَكَّسَ رَأسَهُ وَبَكى
3. But when I swore to him
that I was fasting, he laughed.
٣. فَلَمّا أَن حَلَفتُ لَهُ
بِأَنّي صائِمٌ ضَحِكا
