1. We parted from people when they grew aware,
Yet sweet is the time we happen to meet.
١. إِنّا اِهتَجَرنا لِلناسِ إِذ فَطِنوا
وَبَينَنا حينَ نَلتَقي حَسَنُ
2. We dispute the matter though it draws near,
Until with age, to it they're inured.
٢. نُدافِعُ الأَمرَ وَهوَ مُقتَبِلٌ
فَشَبَّ حَتّى عَلَيهِ قَد مَرَنوا
3. No eye profits from such beholding,
Nor ear from hearing his calumny.
٣. فَلَيسَ تَقذى عَينٌ مُعايِنَةٌ
لَهُ وَما إِن تَمُجُّهُ أُذُنُ
4. Woe to Thaqif! What harms it cause them
If among their abodes I make my home?
٤. وَيحُ ثَقيفٍ ماذا يَضُرُّهُمُ
إِن كانَ لي في دِيارِهِم سَكَنُ
5. Most of our talk increases, so if
We add, add they, though it has no price.
٥. أَكثَرُ ما بَينَنا الحَديثُ فَإِن
زِدنا فَزيدوا وَما لِذا ثَمَنُ
