Had he been alive, escaping ruin,

لو كان حي وائلا من التلف

1. Had he been alive, escaping ruin,
The dove would have nested atop the tall stalks.

١. لَو كانَ حَيٌّ وائِلاً مِنَ التَلَف
لَوَأَلَت شَغواءُ في أَعلى شَعَف

2. The mother of the chicks kept them in the burrow,
Pecking at scattered seeds, not eating with his beak.

٢. أُمُّ فُرَيخٍ أَحرَزَتهُ في لَجَف
مُزَغَّبَ الأَلغادِ لَم يَأكُل بِكَف

3. As if he were sitting back, lost in fantasy -
Bring him here or keep him atop the high ledge,

٣. كَأَنَّهُ مُستَقعِدٌ مِنَ الخَرَف
هاتيكَ أَو عَصماءَ في أَعلى شَرَف

4. Darting about the cage, accustomed to captivity,
Knowledge died when its people passed away.

٤. تَروغُ في الطُبّاقِ وَالنَزعِ الأَلَف
أَودى جِماعُ العِلمِ مُذ أَودى خَلَف

5. Whoever does not consider knowledge but what they knew
Is an ignorant fool, lost and confused,

٥. مَن لا يُعَدُّ العِلمُ إِلّا ما عَرَف
قَلَيذَمٌ مِنَ العَياليمِ الخُسُف

6. So whenever we desire, we draw from it
A narrative not gathered from the scriptures.

٦. فَكُلَّما نَشاءُ مِنهُ نَغتَرِف
رِوايَةً لا تُجتَنى مِنَ الصُحُف
