1. The drunkard closed his eyes
To the wine cup, fearing reproach
١. أَما وَصُدودِ مَخمورٍ
بِعَينَيهِ عَنِ الكاسِ
2. From boon companions.
He pretended to sip the wine,
٢. فَلَمّا خَشِيَ الإِلحا
حَ مِن صَحبٍ وَجُلّاسِ
3. Lifting the cup with languid eyes,
With slow, weak hands.
٣. وَأَلّا يَقبَلوا عُذراً
تَحَسّاها مَعَ الحاسي

His eyes and head promised us
٤. بِكَفَّي فاتِرِ اللَحظِ
رَخيمِ الدَلِّ مَيّاسِ
5. That he would drink.
If you are called Abbas,
٥. لَنا مِنهُ مَواعيدٌ
بِعَينَيهِ وَبِالراسِ
6. You are no Abbas!
You are no man of generosity,
٦. لَئِن سُمّيتَ عَبّاساً
فَما أَنتَ بِعَبّاسِ
7. Rather an Abbas of meanness.
You deserve distinction,
٧. لَدى الجودِ وَلَكِنَّ
كَ عَبّاسٌ لَدى الباسِ
8. Father of distinction above all mankind!
٨. وَبِالفَضلِ لَكَ الفَضلُ
أَبا الفَضلِ عَلى الناسِ
