1. With a drink as though we were sipping
In crystal cups, it shone like a lamp
١. وَعُقارٍ كَأَنَّما نَتَعاطى
في كُؤوسِ اللُجَينِ مِنها سِراجا
2. A glistening one, as if it were every perfume
Wed together, though it cares not for marriage
٢. خَندَريسٌ كَأَنَّها كُلُّ طيبٍ
زَوَّجوها وَلَيسَ تَهوى الزَواجا
3. So the remorseful turned away their faces with arrows
That wound not, nor make a sound
٣. فَرَمَت أَوجُهَ النُدامى بِنَبلٍ
لَيسَ يُدمي وَلَيسَ يُبدي شِجاجا
4. A graceful gazelle mixed me a cup
A poet of Hashim who hit the right blend
٤. مَزَجَ الكَأسَ لي غَزالٌ أَديبٌ
هاشِمِيٌّ أَصابَ فيها المِزاجا
5. I took it carefully and sipped like a thirsty beast
With a languid eye, enchanting and wooing
٥. فَتَحَسَّيتُها وَناوَلتُ ظَبياً
فاتِرَ الطَرفِ ساحِراً مِغناجا
6. He said to me, as the wine took hold
My lord, if you wish, make me your amusement
٦. قالَ لي وَالمُدامُ تَأخُذُ فيهِ
يا أَميري إِن كُنتَ بي مِلهاجا
7. So I said willingly, come now my beauty
To the bed, make haste and fly
٧. فَقُمِ الآنَ طائِعاً قُلتُ عُج بي
يا مَليكي إِلى الفِراشِ فَعاجا
8. There we loosened a knot of silk
And unveiled its brocade cover
٨. فَحَلَلنا هُناكَ تِكَّةَ خَزٍّ
وَحَسَرنا قَباءهُ الديباجا
9. Then I sent a loyal hawk, quick and keen
To kill the goose, and then the drake
٩. ثُمَّ أَرسَلتُ بازَ صِدقٍ نَشيطاً
يَقتُلُ الوَزَّ ثُمَّ وَالدُرّاجا
