لقد سرني أن الهلال غدية

1. I rejoiced that the crescent moon at dawn
Appeared delicate and imaginative

١. لَقَد سَرَّني أَنَّ الهِلالَ غُدَيَّةً
بَدا وَهوَ مَمشوقُ الخَيالِ دَقيقُ

2. The days have worn it down until it seems
A soft bridle held gently in both hands

٢. أَضَرَّت بِهِ الأَيّامُ حَتّى كَأَنَّهُ
عِنانٌ لَواهُ بِاليَدَينِ رَفيقُ

3. I stood to console it, its bone thinned
And the sun’s dawn had come

٣. وَقَفتُ أُعَزّيهِ وَقَد دَقَّ عَظمُهُ
وَقَد حانَ مِن شَمسِ النَهارِ شُروقُ

4. To shame the revelers - you are doomed
For what befalls you is deserved, genuine

٤. لِيَهنِ وُلاةَ اللَهوِ أَنَّكَ هالِكٌ
فَأَنتَ بِما يَجري عَلَيكَ حَقيقُ

5. When the fasting month appeared, my critic gloated
But you, o Shawwal, are my true friend

٥. وَإِنّي بِشَهرِ الصَومِ إِذ بانَ شامِتٌ
وَإِنَّكَ يا شَوّالُ لي لَصَديقُ

6. You've brought back my youthful vigor and passion
An early bright morning has arrived, shining

٦. فَقَد عاوَدَت نَفسي الصَبابَةَ وَالهَوى
وَحانَ صَبوحٌ باكِرٌ وَغَبوقُ
