1. This is the mask of the enchanted night,
So drink, for dawn's first glow is in sight.
١. هَذا قِناعُ اللَيلِ مَحسورُ
فَاِشرَب فَقَد لاحَ التَباشيرُ
2. A wine unpressed by any hand,
Unmarred by storms over the land.
٢. سُلافَةً لَم تَعتَصِرها يَدٌ
وَلَم يُدَنِّسها الأَعاصيرُ
3. When water you espy, it flows to you,
As embers flying, bright and new.
٣. تَنزو إِذا الماءُ تَراءى لَها
كَما رَمى بِالشَرَرِ الكيرُ
4. Noble though her lineage august,
Be it Kisra's or Sabur's trust.
٤. كَريمَةٌ أَصغَرُ آبائِها
إِن نُسِبَت كِسرى وَسابورُ
5. Over her the ages held sway
And hid her from life's disarray.
٥. طَوى عَلَيها الدَهرُ أَيّامَهُ
وَعُمِّيَت عَنها المَقاديرُ
6. Until when halfway was the strain,
Deliverance from it she did gain.
٦. فَلَم تَزَل تَخلُصُ حَتّى إِذا
صارَ إِلى النِصفِ بِها الصيرُ
7. She came like a soul without a core
That formed it gently or lit before.
٧. جاءَت كَروحٍ لَم يَقُم جَوهَرٌ
لُطفاً بِهِ أَو يُحصِهِ نورُ
8. A rogue pours her, full of guile,
To camels trained to walk the mile.
٨. يَسقِكَها مُختَلَقٌ ماجِنٌ
مُعَوَّدٌ لِلسَقيِ نِحريرُ
9. His saddle-girth in twain, eyes bleared,
Askance, their sockets blood-inseared.
٩. مُنقَطِعُ الرِدفِ هَضيمُ الحَشا
أَحوَرُ في عَينَيهِ تَفتيرُ
10. A scorpion has stung his cheek, hence
The swelling with amberscence.
١٠. قَد عَقرَبَت رابِيَةٌ صُدغَهُ
فَالصَدغُ بِالعَنبَرِ مَطرورُ
11. Better to walk in bliss, the sage
Avers, than ride the camel's stage.
١١. أَحسَنُ مِن سَيرٍ عَلى ناقَةٍ
سَيرٌ عَلى اللَذَةِ مَقصورُ
