1. I have exhausted in you the meanings of complaining,
And descriptions of what misfortune I have endured.
١. أَفنَيتُ فيكِ مَعانِيَ الشَكوى
وَصِفاتِ ما أَلقى مِنَ البَلوى
2. I have wandered the horizons of speech, but have not
Found myself falling short of meaning.
٢. جَوَّلتُ آفاقَ الكَلامِ فَما
أَبصَرتُني قَصَّرتُ عَن مَعنى
3. And I count what I do not complain of as a loss,
So I return to it again.
٣. وَأَعُدُّ ما لا أَشتَكي غَبَناً
فَأَعودُ فيهِ مَرَّةً أُخرى
4. If what I complained of were to a human,
It would give me relief from the humiliation of complaining.
٤. فَلَوَ أَنَّ ما أَشكو إِلى بَشَرٍ
لَأَراحَني مِن ذِلَّةِ الشَكوى
5. But I complain to a stone,
The picks recoil from it, or harder.
٥. لَكِنَّما أَشكو إِلى حَجَرٍ
تَنبو المَعاوِلُ عَنهُ أَو أَقسى
6. A gazelle with its crying and laughter,
In us you enlighten and darken the world.
٦. ظَبيٌ بِمَبكاهُ وَمَضحَكِهِ
فينا تُنيرُ وَتُظلِمُ الدُنيا
