1. One day I sat awhile
When the cool morning breeze did gently flow

2. In the courtyard of the prince by the river Nahrawan
Until it was time for the first call to prayer

3. Then Munthir, my mentor in righteousness and kindness
Stood up to pray

4. And with each utterance we responded
Until the call to prayer was complete

5. Then he said "How can you bear witness to this
Without seeing with your eyes?"

6. "I do not testify to this life until
My eyes see plainly"

7. So I said "Glory be to my Lord"
And he said "Glory to the one who prevents me"

8. So I said "Jesus is a messenger"
And he said "No, from Satan"

9. So I said "Moses, deliverer
Of the protected and bountiful"

10. And he said "Your Lord has a body
With ears and tongue, doesn't he?"

11. "Did He create Himself
Or did someone else?" Then I stood up and left

12. Saying "My Lord is full of mercy and forgiveness"
And I got up to drag my robe

13. Away from one mocking the Quran
