قد أغتدي والليل في مكتمه

1. The night has fallen in its darkest hour
With a howling so gloomy it's known by its name

١. قَد أَغتَدي وَاللَيلُ في مَكتَمِهِ
بِيُؤيُؤٍ أَسفَعَ يُدعى بِاِسمِهِ

2. Opposing are his uncle and cousin
So which noble vein did not put him to shame?

٢. مُقابَلٌ مِن خالِهِ وَعَمِّهِ
فَأَيُّ عِرقٍ صالِحٍ لَم يُنمِهِ

3. And an archer who was protected by his mother
If only he could, he'd devour his flesh raw

٣. وَقانِصٍ أَحفى بِهِ مِن أُمِّهِ
لَو يَستَطيعُ قاتَهُ بِلَحمِهِ

4. He still admonishes and gulps down his wine
Instilling in him words of his knowledge

٤. ما زالَ في تَقديحِهِ وَنَهمِهِ
يوحي إِلَيهِ كَلِماتِ عِلمِهِ

5. Protecting him from the cold night's dew with his sleeve
Like a mother sheltering her son in an embrace

٥. يَقيهِ مِن بَردِ النَدى بِكُمِّهِ
تَوقِيَةَ الأُمِّ اِبنَها في ضَمِّهِ

6. And the scent she savors when she gives him a kiss
He descends upon the astrologers at their brightest star

٦. وَما يُلِذُّ أَنفَها مِن شَمِّهِ
يُنازِلُ المُكّاءَ عِندَ نَجمِهِ

7. Forcefully or goes down at their wisest decree
He rides the hilltops with his mouth

٧. بِالغَتِّ أَو يَنزِلُ عِندَ حُكمِهِ
يَركَبُ أَطرافَ الصَوى بِخَطمِهِ

8. And how many beauties he brought down out of spite
After quenching his thirst with the wine from his flask

٨. وَكَم جَميلٍ حَطَّهُ بِرَغمِهِ
وَقَد سَقاهُ عَلَلاً مِن شَمِّهِ
