1. Though I am wanton and dissolute,
Religion occurs not to my mind.
١. إِنّي وَإِن كُنتُ ماجِناً خَرِقاً
لا يَخطِرُ النُسكُ لي عَلى بالِ
2. Modest I am, decorous withal;
My honor by gold won from mankind.
٢. لَذو حَياءٍ وَذو مُحافَظَةٍ
مُبتاعُ حَمدِ الرِجالِ بِالغالي
3. If riches can stain the freeborn man,
My honor is kept by riches fine.
٣. فَإِن دَنَّسَ المالُ عِرضَ ذي شَرَفٍ
فَإِنَّ عِرضي يُصانُ بِالمالِ
4. The ample-hipped and lovely doe
I love, nor cloak I that love of mine.
٤. وَأَعشَقُ الجُؤذُرَ الرَخيمَ وَلا
أَكتُمُ حُبّي لَهُ فَيَخفى لي
5. In the tavern of pipeline fair
They strap her hips with a figured belt.
٥. وَخَندَريسٍ باكَرتُ حانَتَها
فَوَدَّجوا خَصرَها بِمِبزالِ
6. Down her neck the sweat trickles, like
A stream where a bracelet has lately dwelt.
٦. فَسالَ عِرقٌ عَلى تَرائِبِها
كَأَنَّ مَجراهُ فَتلُ خَلخالِ
7. Till when, the wine working, she smiles,
Throwing her pearls away in play.
٧. حَتّى إِذا صَبَّها مُفَدَّمَةً
تَضحَكُ عَن جَوهَراتِ لِآلِ
8. Then I summon Satan and say to him,
"Prithee, spare that drink to our little clay!"
٨. دَعَوتُ إِبليسَ ثُمَّ قُلتُ لَهُ
لا تَسقِ هَذا الشَرابَ عُذّالي
9. So we pass the night, while the golden flask
Goes round the circle in merriment.
٩. فَبِتُّ أُسقى وَمَن كَلِفتُ بِهِ
مُدامَةً صُفِّقَت بِسَلسالِ
