1. Every passion has a cause,
From which it originates and branches out.
١. ما هَوىً إِلّا لَهُ سَبَبُ
يَبتَدي مِنهُ وَيَنشَعِبُ
2. My heart was tempted by a veiled one,
Her face covered with beauty.
٢. فَتَنَت قَلبي مُحَجَّبَةٌ
وَجهُها بِالحُسنِ مُنتَقِبُ
3. She came adorned with beauty, taking it,
Choosing the best of it.
٣. حَلِيَت وَالحُسنُ تَأخُذُهُ
تَنتَقي مِنهُ وَتَنتَخِبُ
4. She took from it subtle graces,
And exceeded in what it gives.
٤. فَاِكتَسَت مِنهُ طَرائِفَهُ
وَاِستَزادَت فَضلَ ما تَهِبُ
5. If she tried with it to return to it,
No shame would deter her.
٥. فَهيَ لَو صَيَّرَت فيهِ لَها
عَودَةً لَم يَثنِها أَرَبُ
6. What she jested with in earnest
Many an earnest thing is caused by play.
٦. صارَ جِدّاً ما مَزَحتُ بِهِ
رُبَّ جِدٍّ جَرَّهُ اللَعِبُ
