1. My eyes refused to sleep after you
How can one who is sick sleep?
١. أَبَت عَينايَ بَعدَكِ أَن تَناما
وَكَيفَ يَنامُ مَن ضَمِنَ السُقاما
2. I cried from the separation when I met
And revisited youth and passion
٢. بَكَيتُ مِنَ الفِراقِ لِما أُلاقي
وَراجَعتُ الصَبابَةَ وَالغَراما
3. And I returned to Iraq against my will
And left the Levant and Damascus
٣. وَعُدتُ إِلى العِراقِ بِرَغمِ أَنفي
وَفارَقتُ الجَزيرَةَ وَالشَآما
4. On the coast of Damascus and its inhabitants
Greetings from a Muslim who met the doves
٤. عَلى شَطِّ الشَآمِ وَساكِنيهِ
سَلامُ مُسَلِّمٍ لَقِيَ الحِماما
5. A feminine notebook, a love letter
When she appears, she resembles a boy
٥. مُذَكَّرَةٌ مُؤَنَّثَةٌ مَهاةٌ
إِذا بَرَزَت تُشَبِّهُها الغُلاما
6. She avoids water and pure honey
And drinks from her youth the wine
٦. تَعافُ الماءَ وَالعَسَلَ المُصَفّى
وَتَشرَبُ مِن فُتُوَّتِها المُداما
7. She says to her sword, O sword rejoice
You will be satisfied with blood and lead the attack
٧. تَقولُ لِسَيفِها يا سَيفُ أَبشِر
سَتُروى مِن دَمٍ وَتَقُدُّ هاما
8. And one advising her sincerely
Why did you kill this brave one?
٨. وَقائِلَةٍ لَها مِن وَجهِ نُصحٍ
عَلامَ قَتَلتِ هَذا المُستَهاما
9. Her elegant reply was
Shall I combine this face and the unlawful?
٩. فَكانَ جَوابُها في حُسنِ مَسٍّ
أَأَجمَعُ وَجهَ هَذا وَالحَراما
10. The trade of every lover succeeded
Who gifts his beloved greetings
١٠. لَقَد رَبِحَت تِجارَةُ كُلِّ صَبٍّ
تُهاديهِ حَبيبَتُهُ السَلاما
