لا تبك للذاهبين في الظعن

1. Weep not for those who left in sorrow's night,
Nor stand where roads end and journeys blight.

١. لا تَبكِ لِلذاهِبينَ في الظُعُنِ
وَلا تَقِف بِالمَطِيِّ في الدِمَنِ

2. Come! Let's enjoy what morn's young hand presents
From a fawn's palm whilst keen with good intents.

٢. وَعُج بِنا نَصطَبِح مُعَتَّقَةً
مِن كَفِّ ظَبيٍ يَسقيكَها فَطِنِ

3. His lovely looks do of his goodness tell;
Dark-lashed eyes take hearts prisoner and quell.

٣. تُخبِرُ عَن طيبِهِ مَحاسِنُهُ
مُكَحِّلٌ ناظِرَيهِ بِالفِتَنِ

4. I spied him not from any quarter but
Saw there perfection, loveliness absolute.

٤. ما أَمَّتِ العَينُ مِنهُ ناحِيَةً
إِلّا أَقامَت مِنهُ عَلى حَسَنِ

5. He's graced with cheeks whence flows a stream that waters
Chin mounds rising o'er his collar's borders.

٥. يُزهى بِخَدَّينِ سالَ فَوقَهُما
صُدغانِ قَد أَشرَفا عَلى الذَقَنِ

6. Till perfection was completed in his charm,
Wit and grace proclaimed, 'Be thou shaped thus and form!'

٦. حَتّى إِذا ما الجَمالُ تَمَّ لَهُ
وَالظُرفُ قالا لَهُ كَذا فَكُنِ

7. I vied with glass of wine red as his lips
To drive away the woes that to sad bosoms cling.

٧. نازَعتُهُ في الزُجاجِ مِثلَ دَمِ ال
شادِنِ تَنفي طَوارِقَ الحَزَنِ

8. The morning breeze then stirred in his slender waist,
As in his neck eve's languor interlaced.

٨. فَدَبَّتِ الراحُ في مَفاصِلِهِ
وَرَنَّقَت فيهِ فَترَةُ الوَسَنِ

9. I said, while passion courted him with yearning,
'Hast longing for sleep?' Said he, 'No, I've no burning

٩. قُلتُ لَهُ وَالكَرى يُغازِلُهُ
هَل لَكَ في النَومِ قالَ لَم يَحِنِ

10. Desire for slumber, but the morn I await
To rise up fresh, serene, sedate.'

١٠. يُراقِبُ الصُبحَ أَن يَبينَ لَهُ
فَيَغتَدي سالِماً وَلَم يَهِنِ

11. But when drowsiness assailed him and held sway,
He slept; and from his stillness joy I did convey.

١١. حَتّى إِذا ما النُعاسُ أَقصَدَهُ
نامَ فَنِلتُ السُرورَ مِن سَكَني

12. When he was captured, I exclaimed in glee
Not 'Would he had not been!' but 'Hail! What bliss for me!'

١٢. فَلَم أَقُل بَعدَما ظَفِرتُ بِهِ
يا لَيتَ ما كانَ مِنهُ لَم يَكُنِ

13. Though lewdness gathered us, we seemed as if
Two birds paired on a bough in friendliest love.

١٣. كَأَنَّنا وَالفُسوقُ يَجمَعُنا
بَعدَ الكَرى طائِرانِ في غُصُنِ

14. Seek thou not secret sensual delights, but go
With open heart to them like one who casts off woe.

١٤. لا تَطلُبَنَّ اللَذّاتِ مُكتَتِماً
وَاِغدُ إِلَيها كَخالِعِ الرَسَنِ
