١. قَد أَغتَدي قَبلَ طُلوعِ الشَمسِ
بِأَحجَنِ الخَطمِ كَمِيِّ النَفسِ
2. A lamb bleating save to be eaten yesterday
It delighted in twilight and the twilight rain
٢. غَرثانَ إِلّا أَكلَهُ بِالأَمسِ
آنَسَ بِالطَمسِ وَماءِ الطَمسِ
3. Like a madman's gaze or one possessed
Until when after confinement
٣. كَنَظَرِ المَجنونِ أَو ذي المَسِّ
حَتّى إِذا أَقصَدَ بَعدَ الحَبسِ
4. Twenty priestesses marched
Like Christians in yellow robes
٤. عِشرينَ مِن حُبارِياتٍ قُعسِ
مِثلَ النَصارى في ثِيابٍ طُلسِ
5. There they were between four and five
Slain and bloodied, heads shorn
٥. فَهُنَّ بَينَ أَربَعٍ وَخَمسِ
صَرعى وَمُستَدمٍ أَميمِ الرَأسِ
6. And wars that exhale anguish after misery
As though you dyed them with madder
٦. وَحَرِبٍ يَشفِنُ بَعدَ التَعسِ
كَأَنَّما صَبَغتَها بِوَرسِ
