1. O you who saw me in the caravan as if
I ardently pursued its trail,
2. So I clung to a bough from it that exuded
The scent of musk from its hair,
3. I inhaled its fragrance and was dazzled
Until, when I recovered from the daze,
4. I said to the butterfly, "Lead me on,"
It fluttered from the knot of its waist-wrap,
5. So in the caravan I accomplished my want
And returned no longer seeking its track,
6. Until when sleep was leaving its companion
And the fellow of libertines awoke from his drunkenness
7. Slumber returned to him, then it guided
The sleep of a gazelle to its brink,
8. Oh would that my eyes had coincided with it
In sleep, following the dew of its cheeks,
9. Seeking union with me, but prevented
By a whiteness, like a lion's mouth in its fierceness.
