1. Between wine and water, a beauty
Who fumes with anger when touched by water
١. بَينَ المُدامِ وَبَينَ الماءِ شَحناءُ
تَنقَدُّ غَيظاً إِذا ما مَسَّها الماءُ
2. Until you see in the rims of the cup her eyes
White, with no defect or illness
٢. حَتّى تُرى في حَوافي الكَأسِ أَعيُنُها
بيضاً وَلَيسَ بِها مِن عِلَّةٍ داءُ
3. As if when she winks with her eyelids
She is, from her subtlety, a gazelle of the imagination
٣. كَأَنَّها حينَ تَمطو في أَعِنَّتِها
مِنَ اللَطافَةِ في الأَوهامِ عَنقاءُ
4. She builds a sky on suspended land
As if she is a pendant and the land is white
٤. تَبني سَماءً عَلى أَرضٍ مُعَلَّقَةٍ
كَأَنَّها عَلَقٌ وَالأَرضُ بَيضاءُ
5. Its stars are bubbles in her bowl, pendants
Dimmed by the stars of the cup, desires
٥. نُجومُها يَقَقٌ في صَحنِها عَلَقٌ
يُقِلُّها مِن نُجومِ الكَأسِ أَهواءُ
6. She transcended description until names
Fall short of describing her
٦. جَلَّت عَنِ الوَصفِ حَتّى ما يُطالِبُها
وَهمٌ فَتَخلُفُها في الوَصفِ أَسماءُ
7. When she disappeared, thoughts divided her
As opinions divided religions
٧. تَقَسَّمَتها ظُنونُ الفِكرِ إِذ خَفِيَت
كَما تَقَسَّمَتِ الأَديانَ آراءُ
8. From the palm of one with soft cheeks, sweet is his image
As if in the eye’s view, he is a virgin
٨. مِن كَفِّ ذي غَنَجٍ حُلوٌ شَمائِلُهُ
كَأَنَّهُ عِندَ رَأيِ العَينِ عَذراءُ
9. For him I cried as the palm tree stalk cries for
An abode and ruins, a wailing weeper
٩. لَهُ بَكَيتُ كَما يَبكي النَوى رَجُلٌ
عَلى المَعالِمِ وَالأَطلالِ بَكّاءُ
