1. O Baghdad, you were once the paradise of the nation,
The solace of hearts and the abode of glory.

2. You were known as the home of peace and the dome of Islam,
The seat of the Caliphate and sanctuary.

3. O jewel of the world! You brought together the two rivers
In a confluence of creativity and excellence.

4. And you gathered from the corners of life an effusion
That sings and sates the thirst of the thirsty.

5. O flower of the world and breath of passion,
The fluttering of yearning and the throbbing of tenderness.

6. Your sciences blossomed in life and gave off
The fragrance of roses and the scent of basil.

7. So you unleashed upon the desert a nation
Of genius, knowledge, and brilliance.

8. In every field you raised banners
And pulpits, and you raised up buildings.

9. And for you the ways of misguidance were vanquished
And dangerous pits and horrors of disasters.

10. No matter how desires changed upon your land,
Your era will remain the bond of faith.

11. A house adorned with the glory of a nation,
Glorified by history with many crowns.

12. The history of Islam and the wealth of a nation,
Or the splendor of hopes and the pride of existence.

13. Alas! They came upon you in battleships like mountains
And crowds of machinery and convoys.

14. They marched with their tanks! With their planes!
With the monstrous apparatus of tyranny.

15. They marched upon you like a tidal wave
Of storms, darkness, and floods.

16. With fire! With rockets raining down
The horrors of hell and torrents of anguish.

17. And they bombarded you with scorching flames! Woe to them!
And crazed lightning bolts and smoke.

18. It was as if the sky unleashed its flames
And the earth discharged the wrath of volcanoes.

19. How many children were consumed by its flames!
And girls folded into sorrows.

20. Limbs of children strewed about,
And elders and the blossoms of youth.

21. The raids continue without respite,
Bombing the streets and buildings.

22. Edifices collapse amidst the dreadful thunder
Of its flames, hellfire, and smoke.

23. The terrors of the missiles conjured
Against the streets and dunes.

24. My fervor for Baghdad, as it is engulfed
In scattered fires persisting in the quarters of Baghdad.

25. When you look you see only blazing flames
And the onslaught of smoke.

26. It was as if no human nor a trace of buildings
Remained in its squares.

27. The criminal tyrants claimed to have brought you
The ethos of kindness!

28. Alas! They brought upon you the calamities of fires!
They brought their greed and the fervor of gluttony

29. Concealed in embellished words and rhetoric.
You remained alone with those who came to you

30. With sincere and unwavering support.
Then the packs of hypocrites turned away,

31. Hordes of wolves and rats.
The siege against you was prolonged! Every one of its years

32. Was oppression of tyrants and severity of tyranny.
Wondrous is your patience after their lengthy siege,

33. O Iraq, and the cruelty of deprivation.
They tightened their grip on you and straitened, but you endured

34. In prolonged hope and dignity and repute.
The mothers see in their children

35. The moaning of empty bowels and bodies.
Stricken with severe illness! With no medicine

36. Or food, victims of aggression.
These millions who fell as martyrs to

37. Injustice, siege, and calumny.
Wondrous is your patience, O Iraq, against their severe siege

38. And calamities of abandonment.
How did you rise from the siege, from the wounds,

39. From destruction and the onslaught of disbelief?!
They thought with the siege you would eventually

40. Succumb beneath them and incline to surrender.
But you endured, you did not succumb! So they thought

41. There was no choice but to wage war against you for support.
The siege failed! And all their hopes were dashed!

42. They erupted in anger and fury!
For a major crime! And bombing of locales

43. With fire, rockets, planes.
And with all the apparatus of destruction, every right

44. Was violated in hearts in a frenzy of excess.
Yet you rose from the siege with a thunderous

45. Resolve, prowling the battlefield.
O Baghdad! Alas! Such is our condition

46. Since you were afflicted! So who was the perpetrator?!
Their features are obscured! And each claims

47. The honor of heroism or the hand of benevolence.

48. The scales of justice are lost and vanished.
Alas! Where is the justice of the scales?

49. My fervor for Baghdad among its homes
Is a conflagration erupting in flames and smoke.

50. Baghdad, do not surrender! Ignite
The flames of resolve and leap of steeds.

51. And ignite a blaze that pours upon the enemy
The flames of hell and wrath of volcanoes.

52. Do not despair Baghdad though the course may be long
For victory is the resolve of one who perseveres and attacks.

53. And war has rounds in which will be revealed
The honor of covenants and the bond of faith.

54. So rise up and make the earth quake beneath their soldiers
And equipment with missiles of fire.

55. And of offensives like the advance of mountains against them,
And storms that cast their ships of malice,

56. And tempests that shake their pillars and foundations.
That is true heroism! How majestic its loyalty,

57. From every resolute soul on the battlefield.
Baghdad! God's rope is the firmest resolve,

58. So hold fast! My fervor for the quarters of Baghdad.
Bolster the bonds of faith! Your victory is a sign

59. From God if you uphold benevolence.
Good tidings that continue to emerge on our horizons,

60. The hope of hearts and joy of times.
