1. No snake revived by its dead,
No molars grew on gums bare;
١. ما حَيَّةٌ مَيتَةٌ أَحيَت بِمَيِّتِها
دَرداءُ ما أَنبَتَت سِنّاً وَأَضراسا
2. Black, white, all names the same,
Untouched by grasping hands.
٢. ما السودُ وَالبيضُ وَالأَسماءُ واحِدَةٌ
لا يَستَطيعُ لَهُنَّ الناسُ تَمساسا
3. No ships that feared no storm
Crossed the far horizons;
٣. ما مُرتَجاتٌ عَلى هَولٍ مَراكِبُها
يَقطَعنَ طولَ المَدى سَيراً وَأَمراسا
4. No cutters of a land so bleak
Came racing without looking back.
٤. ما القاطِعاتُ لِأَرضٍ لا أَنيسَ بِها
تَأتي سِراعاً وَما يَرجِعنَ أَنكاسا
5. No wailers loudly in the open
More pressing than a room stuffed with chaff;
٥. ما الفاجِعاتُ جِهاراً في عَلانِيَةٍ
أَشَدُّ مِن فَيلَقٍ مَملوأَةٍ باسا
6. No racers faster than birds in leisure,
Even if you bridled them with snaffle.
٦. ما السابِقاتُ سِراعَ الطَيرِ في مَهلٍ
لا تَستَكينُ وَلَو أَلجَمتَها فاسا
7. No cutters of the air in the open
Before dawn, writing no lines;
٧. ما القاطِعاتُ لِأَرضِ الجَوِّ في طَلَقٍ
قَبلَ الصَباحِ وَما يَسرينَ قِرطاسا
8. No rulers without hearing, sight,
Or eloquent tongues to please people.
٨. ما الحاكِمونَ بِلا سَمعٍ وَلا بَصَرٍ
وَلا لِسانٍ فَصيحٍ يُعجِبُ الناسا
