1. We gave Imru' al-Qais, son of Hujr, son of Harith,
Cups of wild roses, until he was accustomed to enslavement.
١. سَقَينا اِمرَأَ القَيسِ اِبنَ حُجرِ اِبنِ حارِثٍ
كُؤوسَ الشَجا حَتّى تَعَوَّدَ بِالقَهرِ
2. He was stupefied by smooth, sparkling wine,
And exhausted by a vengeance he was seeking on Hujr's lap.
٢. وَأَلهاهُ شُربٌ ناعِمٌ وَقُراقِرٌ
وَأَعياهُ ثَأرٌ كانَ يَطلُبُ في حُجرِ
3. By my life, that was easier for him
Than white swords and brown spears.
٣. وَذاكَ لَعَمري كانَ أَسهَلَ مَشرَعاً
عَلَيهِ مِنَ البيضِ الصَوارِمِ وَالسُمرِ
