1. O doctor of eyes, my eyes complain
Of the glance of a houri's creation

2. It is an eye that knows not wanton looks
And was never lined with anything but charm

3. So be gentle with it, for in its hidden sleep
Are secrets of a hidden world

4. In it are my heart's dreams and longings
And visions of my youth and passions

5. It is dearer than clan and riches
And dearer than all things precious

6. It is, O doctor, my grand window
Onto the universe, visions and arts

7. It is my bridge to life and my balloon
In its deep sea sails my ship

8. And it yearns for al-Husayn, ceasing not
Delighted by the beauty of that Husayn

9. It turns to the sorrowful and weeps
Sorrow for the grief of the sorrowful

10. It turns to the disgraced and protects
With mercy, not gloating, over the disgraced

11. It longs for every line in a book
And margin in texts

12. It is water, so how can you extract water
From water with the famed cup?

13. How can you run the knife in it when in it
Is tenderness that cannot bear the whispers of eyelids?

14. It melts in shyness from a word
Of love's reproach and the blaming of cheeks

15. So let there be in your hands Jesus's secrets
And guidance and miracles of the Trustworthy

16. My God, I've submitted my eye to medicine
And You are the Healer, so be gentle with my eye
