1. Tears he would shed though he'd protect them,
A wounded heart though eyelids healed him,
١. دمعٌ سيبذلهُ وكانَ يصونُهُ
دنِفٌ أصيبَ فأسعدتهُ جفونُهُ
2. He did not weep until parting fooled him,
A friend of old, prolonged his crying, his yearning,
٢. لم يبكِ حتَّى غرَّهُ بفراقهِ
إلفٌ وطالَ بكاؤُهُ وحنينُهُ
3. He's used to wakefulness. Can an enamored one sleep?
His sighs and moans won't let him sleep.
٣. ألِفَ السهادَ وهَل ينامُ متيمٌ
ما إن ينامُ زفيرُهُ وأنينُهُ
4. O you who blame me, leave me be! This passion
Won't obey my heart though it's his religion.
٤. يا مَن يلومُ أفِق ودَعني والهَوى
أيُطيعني قلبي وهَذا دينُهُ
