1. The songs pour out while I'm not at home
What secrets could they possibly contain?
١. الأغاني تصبي ولست بدار
أي شيء فيها من الأسرار
2. Is it revelation descending from the heavens?
Or is it magic amongst the ruins?
٢. أهو الوحي هابطا من علوّ
أم هو السحر بين الآثار
3. No beauty perceived by hearing
Like beauty perceived by sight
٣. ما جمال يحس بالسمع الا
كجمال يحس بالابصار
4. Many a delicate singing voice
Prolongs my enchantment when I hear it
٤. رب صوت من الغناء رقيق
طال عند استماعه استعباري
5. And it may fill hearts with delight
Like houses awash in light
٥. ولقد يملأ القلوب سرورا
كبيوت يغرقن في الانوار
6. It is the charmer of all demons
And all pure angels
٦. انه مطرب لكل الشياطين
وكل الملائك الابرار
7. How excellent is the electricity in singing
Its effect on nerves and blood flows nicely
٧. حبذا ما في الشدو من كهرباء
فعله في الاعصاب والدم سار
8. The best singing arrives
From feeling in the heedlessness of thoughts
٨. ان خير الغناء ما كان يأتي
عن شعور في غفلة الافكار
9. And if it doesn't arrive from feeling
It is chaff devoid of sweetness, ruins
٩. واذا لم يكن اتى عن شعور
فهو غث من الطلاوة غار
10. Does the feeling of the great artist
Abound in a distant, calm valley?
١٠. هل شعور الفنان الاكسيل
زاخر في واد بعيد القرار
11. And if the songs shake you, the songs
Are nothing but waves of that torrent
١١. والاغاني اذا شجتك الاغاني
غير امواج ذلك الزخار
12. And when singing overflows, the soul surges
As if amidst a deluge
١٢. واذا ما فاض الغناء تجيش النفس
حتى كأنها في غمار
13. And sights remain fixed while hearing
Yearns for repetition
١٣. وتظل الابصار شاخصة والسمع
في لهفة الى التكرار
14. It's as if we see it through hearing
And call out through sight
١٤. وكأنا نراه بالسمع منا
وكأنا نصيخ بالابصار
15. And it's as if time goes by forgetfully
And place, altogether shy
١٥. وكأن الزمان يذهب نسيا
وكأن المكان اجمع وار
16. The soul feels with it that it is in
A world other than that of burdens
١٦. تحسب النفس عنده انها في
عالم غير عالم الاوزار
17. A world without enemies or rancor
Or desire for vengeance
١٧. عالم لاعداء فيه ولا حقد
ولا رغبة باخذ الثار
18. Send your gaze into the crowds and you see
What traces lie on the faces
١٨. ارسل الطرف في الجماهير تبصر
ماله في الوجوه من آثار
19. How often joy or
Sorrow stirred a song on the lyre
١٩. طالما هاجت السرور او
الاشجان اغنية على قيثار
20. It is kindled fire whose listeners
Imbibe the heat of that fire
٢٠. هي نار مشبوبة يتصبى
سامعيه حسيس تلك النار
21. He who sings rips open the wound
Like a doctor probing the seat of pain
٢١. ينكأ الجرح من يغني ويأسو
كطبيب بموقع الداء دار
22. The garden attained playfulness at last
After long awaiting playfulness
٢٢. ظفر الروض بالهزار اخيرا
بعد طول انتظاره للهزار
23. It came to him like a bird, so when it sang
The birds enlarged it
٢٣. جاءه طائرا فلما تغنى
اكبرته جماعة الاطيار
24. I heard it and when I heard it
I came out in wonder from the dens
٢٤. سمعته وعندما سمعته
خرجت اعجابا من الاوكار
25. One warble follows another
Like eruption coming after eruption
٢٥. تتوالى اغرودة بعد اخرى
كانفجار يأتي وراء انفجار
26. And the listeners were gladdened by a
Dialogue between it and the singer
٢٦. ولقد سر السامعين حوار
بينه في الهوى وبين القماري
27. As if the flowers in the garden
When listening to the dialogue
٢٧. وكأن الازهار في الروض آذا
ن تفتحن لاستماع الحوار
28. All the people in Iraq agree
On congratulating the genius and greats
٢٨. اجمع الشعب في العراق على التر
حيب بالعبقري والاكبار
29. The prince of song, whose musical
Miracles attest to his power
٢٩. بامير الغناء من شهدت آ
يات الحانه له باقتدار
30. And if hearings were eyes
They would see a vision like miracles
٣٠. ولو ان الاسماع كانت عيونا
لراتها لماعة كالدراري
31. Hear from Muhammad his singing
For he is foremost in his art of innovation
٣١. اسمعوا من محمد شدوه
فهو امام في فنه ذو ابتكار
32. He is better than any who sings and stirs
His listeners, the best composer
٣٢. انه خير من تغنى فاشجي
سامعيه وخير موسيقار
33. He raises his voice loudly, then whispers gently
What he whispers to the strings
٣٣. يرفع الصوت جاهرا ثم يلقي
هامسا ما يلقى الى الاوتار
34. Many are novice in every art
But the competent are few
٣٤. كثر الناشؤون في كل فن
غير ان الكفاة غير كثار
35. His fame and popularity are enough
For his leadership of the art
٣٥. حسبه في زعامة الفن ما قد
حازه من ذيعوعة واشتهار
36. Egypt bore him, and how many men
Egypt bore who returned her glory
٣٦. انجبته مصر وكم انجبت مصر
رجالا عادوا لها بالفخار
37. I fear not the demise of those songs
For they are for eternity, not demise
٣٧. لست اخشى بوار تلك الاغاني
انها للخلود لا للبوار
38. I deposited in them all your sorrows
So they seethed and signaled eruption
٣٨. نغمات اودعتها كل اشجا
نك تغلي فآذنت بانفجار
39. You breathed your eternal spirit into them
And they came like flaming infernos
٣٩. انت فيها نفخت من روحك الدا
مي فجاءت كالنار ذات الاوار
40. They tell the woes of a wretched heart
Come complaining of the cruel time
٤٠. فهي تحكي انات قلب كليم
جاء يشكو جور الزمان الضاري
41. And they tell the sighs of a bereaved woman
Struck by the loss of her only light like day
٤١. وهي تحكي رنات ثكلى اصيبت
بوحيد لها كضوء النهار
42. Listening to you sing them was a pleasure
And a gentle flight of birds
٤٢. كان فينا استماعها منك يوما
وطرا حافزا من الاوطار
43. We yearned for a meeting but
Our wretched fate prevented meeting
٤٣. وصبونا الى اللقاء ولكن
حال دون اللقاء شحط المزار
44. Then Baghdad fell, so we welcomed
The wanderer planet
٤٤. ثم لما هبطت بغداد رحبنا
ثبات بالكوكب السيار
45. Then when you burst into song, we swayed
Like one intoxicated by a drink
٤٥. ثم لما انفجرت تشدو ثملنا
كالذي اسكرته كأس العقار
46. Your sweet voice was once
Flooding every house from the phonograph
٤٦. ولقد كان صوتك العذب قبلا
في الفتغراف مالئا كل دار
47. And whenever you raised your voice in Egypt
The rest of the cities reiterated
٤٧. فاذا ما رفعت في مصر صوتا
رددته بقية الامصار
48. Each surpasses the other, for theirs is
Innocence from stumbling in every endeavor
٤٨. يرفع السباقين ان لهم في
كل شوط براءة من عثار
49. O prince of song, yes, for we
Are infatuated by your magic art
٤٩. يا امير الغناء ايه فانا
قد فتنا بفنك السحار
50. O prince of song, you are to us
Worthy of praise and magnificence
٥٠. يا امير الغناء انك منا
لجدير بالحمد والاكبار
51. Strum a tune that stirs your excellent
Singing, all the heart's strings
٥١. هز لحن به شدوت مجيدا
كل ما للقلوب من اوتار
52. Whom your tune doesn't stir
Is hardened rock among rocks
٥٢. ان من لا يهزه منك لحن
