10. But the disk of the moon with its gleam
On some white nights can substitute you

11. O luminous moon you are to me
When the sun departs, a companion and friend

12. You pour on the earth light as if
Melted silver streams in the dunes

13. My heart is devoted to you, O rising moon
For among the blooms you are most beautiful

14. You are the nearest star, O rising moon
Revolving around the earth as you go

15. As the earth comes each year in its orbit
Around the sun, circling in its rotation

16. You have gathered beauty that dazzles my eyes
And delight, what else about you can I say?

17. May God never let you wane, O rising moon
Is there among the stars your equal?

18. I'm weary of a land where merit is lost
And an age where few noble men remain

19. An age that belittles the virtuous
Where ignoramuses dispute with scholars

20. When a man is not esteemed by his people
And shunned by his friends as worthless

21. My soul has a station in the sky it will find
If it sets out sincerely on its journey

22. I fear not losing my way in the cosmos
The twin bright stars are my guide

23. A station without death I cannot attain
While alive, no path leads me there

24. As long as I live, my night entertains me
With the sight of a rising moon soon to set

25. And the brilliant dawn has risen next to it
The white light of morn grows longer

26. When a scream rises from my neighbor's house
Then another and another, dreadful voices

27. Women uncovered whom an incident made shriek
Their screaming followed by sounds of wailing

28. Their lament echoes like moaning doves
Whose morning song is usually gentle trilling

29. Two years ago, there came to this house
A youth who provided for women like gazelles

30. A youth whose beauty no eye had ever seen
With cheeks fresh water of youth courses through

31. A youth not yet past his twentieth year
Called in prayer Nabeel

32. Nabeel was stricken with illness six months ago
I knew him in this house where he was ailing

33. I think Nabeel died of tuberculosis
For someone said his illness was severe

34. You escaped harm, by God, O Nabeel
No longer can harm reach you

35. But you left behind inconsolable women
Whose sorrows are prolonged

36. One of his wives, a widow, lamenting
Twisting in grief, said this:

37. You were beautiful in life and in death
Still beautiful in my eyes

38. Soon this rosy cheek will wither
And these dark eyes will dim

39. You have set out on an eternal journey
Turning away from this life permanently

40. Oh, may the mother who bore you never cease grieving
As you willingly surrender to the soil

41. To whom, to whom can we turn after your death?
When times are harsh and people are mean

42. In this town we live in, we have no one, no one,
Except your tomb where we can cry our laments

43. We have no protector to unite our fragments
No family or tribe to shelter our remains

44. I will adhere to the grave you occupy
And my tears upon your soil will never end
