1. Five young men took flight
Aboard a plane like eagles in flight

2. It ascended into the lofty sky
Then swooped down like a shooting star

3. Their ascent into the sky
Was for glory, exaltation, and triumph

4. The plane's crash as it landed killed them
After cruising at the clouds' course

5. Nothing of them remains on earth
Except scattered limbs or pouring blood

6. It was an unforeseen mishap
Among the decrees of fate that stalled the engine

7. They died in the prime of youth, what a pity
For the calamity and grief it caused

8. Young men who flew seeking glory
And to immortalize their homeland

9. Aboard a plane that circled with them
Through the air like a hawk

10. Whenever I recall the tragedy I feel
Like a burning coal of sadness in my heart

11. I have nothing for my poetry
Except a well of gloom and my tears

12. In sorrow I send poetry as ardent tears
Then send tears as poetry

13. He who died serving his homeland
Lived a life of righteousness

14. One who lived a life of loyalty and virtue
If he dies, is even more virtuous

15. Young lives departed
Mothers and fathers wept for them

16. And Iraq mourned them
As did its people, Tigris and Euphrates

17. Wherever I turned I saw pallid faces
With eyes full of sorrow

18. They were mourned in various cemeteries
With one procession after another

19. Glory does not die though its people
May die in an accident

20. O people despair not
For in death lies great hope

21. O eagle none could shake you
When in flight, steady was your wing

22. Life offers abundant pleasures
Leave it behind at farewell

23. Glory is gained through exertion
Praiseworthy is glory attained through effort

24. We lost five whose courage
Was beyond reproach, what a waste

25. A scene of life and death that wrenches the heart
With its struggle and conflict

26. My soul yearns for the youth who stumbled
And were mourned at dawn's first light

27. That news spread around the two rivers
Weighing heavy on all who heard

28. The sun of my days declined
Leaving behind but a ray

29. Death lurks to ambush people
Seeking a martyr each day

30. The home has been emptied of loved ones
May He who took them return them

31. The nights and days conspired
As nights are wont to scheme

32. If not for my old age and sickness
I'd compose a poem for them each day

33. Blessed are night and day if only
In them we need not perish

34. I thought death takes those in graves
Yet he was far from me

35. Gone is one who yearned to see peace
And meet a gentle death amidst perils

36. A fate that befell five pure souls
A destiny descending from fate

37. Eagles who soared before
Dawn's light heralded departure

38. The danger was darkness but
Eagles fear no perils

39. They boarded a plane that did not fail them
In training or repeated flights

40. Nothing shook it until it plunged like a shooting star
Falling from the sky without warning

41. Then it spun with them inside
Despite the pilot's every attempt

42. Thus occurred what was fated
Their downfall and undoing

43. Each day life offers victims
To appease the specter of death

44. This beautiful one we are
Is but the remnant of those victims

45. We seek to alleviate our woes with play
Hoping woes will thereby be alleviated

46. I do not think life will find peace
From one plague to the next

47. He who granted us minds, if He wills
Can take back what He bestowed

48. He who created marvels from death
Restoring the ruined to marvels

49. Old age has worn me down
Leaving me a heart that moans beneath sorrows
