1. Were it not for the mercy of the Merciful
I would have entered Hell after death

2. Walking in chains seventy armspans long
In shackles and bonds

3. The day they cast me into the blazing Hell
Seven of my Lord's stern angels

4. Set up over it a bridge as narrow as
A single hair, sharper than swords

5. Then they said, "This is your path, take it"
And though it stretched over that valley

6. So I walked over it while underneath me
Glowed red, aflame

7. It boiled like a volcano
Stirring after slumber and sleep

8. Hurling from its depths
Burning embers, rocks and ashes

9. The sinners below plead from within it
With screams that would move the inanimate

10. "Sprinkle us, oh passers-by, with water
These souls are but fuel"

11. Then that screaming faded away
Vanishing in its endless moan

12. Its flames had changed them from the whiteness
That once cloaked faces to blackness

13. What fearsome sights and scenes
That send sorrows to all hearts

14. Lord, make my feet firm, Lord, and save me
Over it, O Lord, save all Your servants

15. And ahead of me on the bridge were people
Who kept on walking steadily, slowly

16. They faltered in their crossing
To become stakes driven into the ground
