1. When I passed by the mosque standing
With the tranquility of piety a standing place of intimate discourse

2. In an army the vanguard of which gives joy to the foremost of right guidance
But to the foremost of error it is depressing

3. In it are the black of war in the basin of the spearhead
Above every trained warrior glittering

4. Of a mailed warrior who meets the spearhead with his coat of mail
In every tight spot dashing and piercing

5. Or an archer with a Turkish quiver
Whose eyes shine with the good tidings of victory
