1. For the beloved you have sincere love,
Faithful in promise and loyalty eminent,

2. His nature refined by nights’ vicissitudes,
As Indian swords are refined.

3. He came from the noblest origin,
Possessing hidden inner gems.

4. Hearts have given him sincerity’s place,
For he is firmly established in his goal.

5. Gifted with wisdom, his judgments are just,
And he has might and firm control.

6. The more his fertile attributes produce,
The more his stored knowledge accrues.

7. He reigns in souls’ domains, and there
His excellent law holds sway.

8. His traces shone for the devout,
Then vanished from all eyes.

9. He opposes passion, checks and forbids it,
While hearts by passion are possessed.

10. I esteem him, though fools think little of him;
He is precious to the wise.

11. The mighty lose no honor among men,
Nor is diminished one men deride.

12. Most honored of created beings is he
Whom the Mighty Creator sanctified,

13. Since first the cosmos came to be.
He guarantees life’s proper ordering,

14. And ensures triumph in the world to come.
Guide for both happinesses complete,

15. In him the youth finds worldly joys,
And in him, too, his faith and din.

16. Who cleaves to him will find in him
A grace; best friends are those who grace.

17. Deprived of bounty is he who
Misses his share and portion.

18. He and knowledge are two sleepers;
All the arts wait on them to adorn.

19. In their perfect equivalence they reached
Peak, beyond all fault or stain.

20. If friends differ in rank, the low
Should seek the high and join thereto.

21. Who takes refuge in Him fears no hosts of foes,
Though they arm themselves with forts.

22. In the glass of His essence worlds of mystery
Are revealed to guessing minds.

23. If black night enshrouds, He clouds all doubt;
Dawn’s glimmerings grow certainty.

24. He has long held converse with the soul,
Which converse makes it moan.

25. Passions warred against it with their hosts,
Though death’s shafts midst them flew thick.

26. No hated thing outlasts,
Except the soul’s arbiter of bliss.

27. At the assault his strokes fall sure;
Lo, the champion of faith’s domain is he!

28. Back the sword with courage, mark
The blade’s strokes, how they fall!

29. A might that astounds behold,
Beyond words however plain.

30. He carried knowledge from its source, a flood
That filled arts and sciences.

31. He ruled land and air, and then held sway
In technical subtleties.

32. Ask electricity, and learn from it
Secrets, insights to amaze.

33. Lightning took from him a flashing brand
Exchanged between them, conductor he.

34. East and West to him are same;
Paris or China cause no strain.

35. Ask the sea how he clove through the murk
With brave steamships plunging on.

36. Never has it spawned a heavier swell,
No galleys stout as they.

37. Clad in steel, vomiting fire hot enough,
To make the steel catch flame,

38. You’d think them granite mountains sailing to and fro
When their keels plow up the main.

39. They terrify the waves, which scream in dread,
Murmur and moan again.

40. Lovely as gardens, yet in their holds
Nestle flames that bide their time.

41. All ease they feign, while in their midst
Burns many a blood feud’s crime.

42. Seek the air, and learn how there he flew
Squadrons lofty as the moon.

43. High the clouds, but not so high
As these nimble cruisers sped.

44. Coursing heaven, eagles they,
That own the boundless skies their stead.

45. The train, too, seized for him earth’s rugged wastes
To level swift highways across.

46. Though the winds keep pace with its swift glide,
The breeze falls back, outdone.

47. Eyes can scarcely glimpse it dashing by,
Its shape eludes defining.

48. Guarding the iron road, a lion roars,
The railroad his secure domain;

49. Into the mountain’s maw he glides like some long worm
Or snake slithering its den within.

50. O prince whose wisdom guides aright,
All wielders of power rely on him.

51. When authority presents itself sincere,
He lends it fortune’s wings.
