1. They excuse themselves with the promise they made
Though long has the time passed for its fulfillment

2. If their affection is still as it was when they promised
Then our love for them remains as they covenanted

3. If they are determined in estranging us
Then the furthest thing from us is determination

4. As for the sweet nights we spent together
And the blissful life as desire ordained

5. The eyes that were once delighted in their company
Now brim with tears and sadness

6. They did us injustice, keeping vigil for them
While they slept through our night wakefully

7. My tearful eyes lament them, and if they prospered
They'd weep for the first calamity at Karbala when they were lost

8. Swords as sharp as Indian blades
Their edge honed by generosity and giving

9. Of lofty rank and station
None can ascend with wishes that height

10. When tested the stalwarts were exposed
In barren times even the prosperous are humbled

11. We compose verses boasting their glory
Which pillars of glory support

12. They led Quraysh, without them the camel's hump
Would not rise, nor the body without the soul

13. Their faces beneath the horses' armor appeared
As stars shining in the darkness of night

14. They march on undeterred by danger
Resolute towards their goal like spear shafts

15. The angry lion advances them
Making them lions on the day of battle

16. As if the sword's sharp edge arouses him
The sun of exile and the souls of foes cool him

17. As if the verses of prostration were inscribed by him
Whenever he drew sword from scabbard they bowed

18. The servant of the sun tried to subject
The Prophet's son to his command

19. Until the two armies clashed, he called them:
"Strike with a blow that startles the resolute"

20. They recoiled where no flowers or breasts existed
With Indian swords through their intestines turning

21. O eye, thirst not, my cheek, for they
Died of thirst while the river kept flowing
