1. The words of fate, death makes them true
While continuation makes them untrue

2. We hope that life will be serene
Yet there is no serenity in this world

3. But we saw it with an eye
That a veil covered its ruggedness

4. It is incurable disease, and nothing
But wisdom can bring it remedy

5. Its days are but mounts
And we are the riders, and death the guide

6. And if immortality in it were bliss
The prophets would have won immortality

7. He who cries for the departed cannot restore them
However much his eyes pour tears

8. Have you not seen how death has demolished
The edifice of knowledge, so the edifice collapsed

9. We have lost patience for the departed
So tears humiliated while consolation was difficult

10. Delighted with what it will attain of bliss
Yet we weep for our lost one

11. And if self-sacrifice were cheap and lowly
Souls boiling with sacrifice had done so

12. It is as if the tears of the weeping
Watered it, so it was saturated

13. O you who saw a shining moon
Shedding the rays of suns as its light

14. The refuge of one distressed with worries, he finds
With him safety if the affliction is great

15. And the refuge of one hopeful, he finds with him
Imminent success if hopes are dashed

16. A beacon of guidance that illuminated and all walked
Rightly in the light of its rising

17. And the scholars circled it disheveled
As moths circle around roses

18. And Muhammad cried for Husayn
With an eye that had given him light

19. No wonder, as his call fills the wild
That it cannot contain him, but space is confined

20. It used to borrow brilliance from him
Now it is gloomy, brilliance borrowed
