1. Will the covenant of companionship be renewed
The covenant was watered from a spring of rain that sufficed

2. My friend, this is the stance of passion and intimacy
And the best of friends is the aider who doubles the aid

3. So cry plentifully over him, for the tears
Are but a greeting from us, cascading tears

4. There were dwellings adorned for bliss
And in them were stands for the lovers

5. Branches sway, smiling therein
And bend with cloaks, they are inclining

6. So do not deny, by the abode, my youthful vigor
For not every heart is knowing of youth

7. So do not be startled, O abode, by your comfort
Where the gazelles were intimate friends

8. The beautiful art, the singing slave-girls, so you honored
And honor the beloved friends, the thousands

9. If sadness made me drink the ruins of their abode
Then how joy made me sip its pillows

10. And if their meadows are now desolate after them
Yet my heart acquaints a thousand with their quarter

11. I stood by it and tears flowed as if I
Were atop the son of Hasan, his blood overflowing

12. A shroud, though hearts could not envelope
The bloodshed, so profound the sorrows

13. How many stars were eclipsed therein, veiling
Their lights, as death extracted lives

14. Towards the son, from the land of Hijaz, I looked
As sorrows folded their coils, fears manifested

15. Security of the fearful left the sanctuary
Fearing the protected may fear what comes

16. It was a sun, and Hijaz shone by its light
Radiant, but after it darkened, gloomed

17. The orchards of its rain roared vibrant greenery
But shadows constricted, bounties confined

18. There called upon him in Iraq a horde
Ruled by an unjust tyrant, storms violent

19. So help them, swift responder to the needy, prime
Of the noble, when called, doubles his speed

20. He marched on, and death hurried his steps
To a stand where stands are forgotten

21. Horses surrounded him, noble, and above them
The noble Hashimites, piercing all directions

22. The sons of Mutammim, birds of the sky, their swords
For them plunging thrusts in the fray and hospitality

23. When they gripped the pine wood of spears, narrowed
Were the expanses for the eagles circling

24. With them, benefaction was known, and courage and munificence
And to the beseechers came abundant graces

25. And they met severe calamity at Karbala
Each with sword's edge meeting calamity head on

26. The clan of the freedman banded against
The family of Muhammad, disgraced lowlifes

27. Gathering only to extinguish by force
The lanterns of God's light, those hordes

28. And the people's writ was but bands
Rushing blood, therein the distant waters mixed

29. And he took their oath, but not one brother
Or ally fulfilling, among them, his pact

30. God refused, the soul and the honorable spirit their injustice
So he died nobly, though injustice distressed him

31. And Ali's soul between his son's side
To God belong those exalted souls

32. And they wanted the rule of the claimant to expire
But Ali said: half is the rule of trial

33. Souls that refused but noble sacrifices proud
To them reached the eternal, continuous glory

34. By my soul, he who revived his grandfather's law
As it neared death, cut off tenderness

35. His father who brandished the faith as a sword
And this, his son, the cub of a lion descriptive

36. Prince of death, Dhulfiqar in his grip
If he decrees a matter none can negate

37. And it flows in his hand a river, and in the palm a stream
Passing over those who tasted his sweet drink

38. He folded their crowds with the Indian steel
As if they were parchments folded in hands

39. And said to the megalomaniac rebels, as if
He were Solomon, but the sword ever faithful

40. He attacks the enemy throng while among them
Singular, so the crawling hordes recoiled

41. Their wings flutter in fear of the falcon
And their hearts quake from the lion's domination

42. His blade prevailing over the armored, propagating
Bearing down on them, his resolve prevailing

43. His stance did not leave his grip amid the fray
Until the sword's lightning snatched a life

44. A martyr ransoming souls, and his sword
Ransomed by swords however many they be

45. He passed away thirsty, before the Euphrates, no
Sweet water flowed, nor clouds sated a thirsty lip

46. And thirsts, but his tormented heart
Quenched the valleys and spears mixed therein

47. And he suckled on arrows, his weaning
Was tasting death's pigeon, while the heart quavered

48. The son of the Messenger of God sought water from him
But compassion never inclined towards him

49. So his mother collapsed on the blood-stained neck
Kissing it while the eyes overflowed with tears

50. I made you, oh death, a flower of the soul
But knew not that the arrow was plucking the bloom

51. To God belongs the valiant against horrors
With only the swift pure sword as ally

52. If calamity intensified, it increased cheer and delight
For death with wishes comes doubled

53. In the earth were his fallen family and kinsmen
And in the abodes the protected, chaste ladies

54. For he felt no worry meeting him harmful
Nor regret for what had passed from him

55. And greater than what he suffered were the chambers of
Maidens pure none had entered but angel hosts

56. And it pained him that the enemy assail them
As they were protected in the shelter of their homes

57. His effort buckled protecting the Fatimids
As the weakened strength doubled its fold

58. For he returned stripped of clothes, bare
So praise when a cover was made and finery

59. And no attire was sweeter than one adorned
With a stab-coat, wounds robed

60. And among the Prophet's family were noble ladies
Sprouting glory for the eternal successors

61. Traveling from one spring to the next
Over hills their caravan folded

62. And they had none of their clan or protectors
On this journey but the body, frail and thin

63. The shining eyes displayed them to the enemy
And a eyelid protected them like a dark night

64. They were cascading sorrows with tears
And were grieving the singular with elegies

65. Voices mourning al-Husayn when they wept
The cooing of doves on branches, equally saddened

66. And upon the spears the heads blossomed as if
Flowers, but the spears plucked them off

67. And they did not carry the heads atop the spears
But rather the scriptures atop the spears
