1. I have no more patience or solace
The waterskin is empty and the eyelids overflow

2. My ribs seem to shine like lightning
And my tears pour down in floods

3. Tears rescue me from the betrayal of grief
For tears are allies against anguish

4. How can there be solace when my beloved ones
Who guided my journey have departed

5. They left their homelands but
Dwelt in the wilderness which became their homelands

6. Seek no life's pleasures after them
For they were the pleasure and have passed

7. They passed and the dwellings became desolate to the onlooker
Neither fruits nor meadows bring joy

8. Oh how I wish I knew if, as it once was,
The days of grace and our time would return

9. So the houses would bloom again with delightful joy
That dwelt in them as they dwelt in hearts

10. Oh neighbors, do you allow a glance
To quench the thirsty, yearning soul?

11. By their loss, daytime was as though
Between sights and space there was smoke

12. The mourners' voices at dawn were as though
Between breasts and wilderness were fires

13. I was distraught beyond myself, terrified
So sorrows and griefs attacked me

14. They said excellence was struck after its clouds
By drought, and its meadows of lilies withered

15. It ascended to the pinnacle of merits and sublimity
Its pride bowed to dust like a pillar

16. His death was intimated to Abu Al-Jawad subtly
Intimation to the wise is eloquence

17. Yes, it assumed perfection and its people
Shifts come but shifting has no safety

18. None feels safe from events except an ignorant one
From the kinds of things events bring

19. Where are the righteous men who followed
Each other in groups like riding camels?

20. Where are the Caesars and Kisras of God
Whose crowns bowed to the sway of their turbans?

21. They left the lofty palaces of glory
And became, beneath the soil, inhabitants

22. Thus those faces were covered in a tomb
Neither musk nearby, nor eagles overhead

23. Saif ibn Dhi Yazan's sword, though forbidden
Was unprotected by scabbard or sheaths

24. And so al-Khornaq, his followers did not last
Neither al-Mundhir the Sublime, nor al-Nu'man

25. Verily death is an abode for all mankind
No commander escapes, nor sultan

26. O pillar of knowledge whose sea
Nourished men, all quenched by it

27. For eloquence and soft speech altogether
You were hearing and by it, mouth and tongue

28. For rhetoric you continued unfurling
To a peak the horsemen aspired to

29. And many an ambiguous line whose darkness
Your flashes dispelled with radiance

30. Who said that to be compared to you
Reason stops, so your merit proves it

31. They bid you farewell and every bidder's eye
Was an eye overflowing with tears

32. Among them only the sorrowful elegist
Or the confused, bewildered soul

33. They carried gardens of creations in your wake
Tears flowing as though they were streams

34. I promised you fair remembrance and praises
Immortalized among us, a binding oath

35. I remain disconnected from a companion, though sometimes
Your peers and comrades were envy for you

36. You gathered humor and piety
But piety to God was your hallmark

37. What can I say when my mind's expanse
Widened the field whenever it sought scope?

38. You gathered all merits completely
Every trait being a kindness

39. Those attributes and comprehensiveness are both
Gone, and every assembly of joy

40. I decided not to find solace or forget - but can
Creations forget, all being beautiful?

41. So your image is depicted in my conscience
Forever - if only the vision was real

42. Your burial place poured down showers of generosity
From which affection and contentment drink

43. You were hidden treasure, but
Your merit weighed heavier in the scale

44. The hidden life is won but
Your righteousness weighed down their scale

45. You are spared the concerns of a worldly life
Whose shadow makes men incline

46. You composed for the House of the Prophet
Poems like radiant pearls illuminating nations

47. Eulogies whose fragrance perfumes lands
And elegies wherein sorrows and laments nest

48. You made the poems precious so their price
Was only the bliss of paradise as payment

49. With each verse you attained a verse of honor
On the day accounts are reckoned by the Diwan
