1. They circled your grave with tears flowing,
Each heart filled with anguish and sorrow.

2. A grave that holds a sacred verse -
It was raised and so Islam's glory grew.

3. O resting place of piety, O vault of the devout,
Greetings of peace descend on you at dawn.

4. Reviver of Islam after its decline -
Greetings from the land of bliss, O cloud.

5. For Muslims, you marked each year
With sorrowful rites held by the pious.

6. Grief whose memory renews our sadness
As years continue to roll on.

7. O sign of the light in which all was illuminated -
The darkness and shadows were dispelled.

8. O sign of the pen whose youthful vigor
Made the bright and common pens bow down.

9. Kings of the earth were awed by you
As your decrees were carried out.

10. You protected the faith of the pure religion from harm
And became its steadfast pillar.

11. How many owe you gratitude they cannot repay
With composition that follows no scheme.

12. You freed from the shackles of captivity many
Who lived in humiliation and oppression.

13. They rose up, trusting in their leader
Who could unravel and tie all knots.

14. You watched over them with caring eyes
Making decisions while eyes slept.

You revived Iraq’s glory and its people

16. Praise be to God who repairs all.
So the people rule themselves

17. With the Prophet's family their guardians.
The rebellious East obeyed you

18. Marching if you marched, halting if you halted.
You shouldered the heaviest burdens

19. With your frail body, while perils loomed.
You were the unwavering beacon for the lost -

20. You raised for them banners of light.
And you shouldered each great task

21. Before which even mountains quaked.
You guided us upon the path, excellent indeed

22. The path with you our imam.
In upholding the Law you exemplified

23. A methodology our scholars follow.
The way of Prophet Muhammad upheld by Muhammad

24. Whose stature cannot be attained.
For him is valor against enemies and piety -

25. Indeed, he is the devout warrior.
In days before his rise, schools belonged

26. To the misguided ignorant.
The sound of opinion sought him when it shot

27. Seeking truth like well-aimed arrows.
By God's grace his secret aim succeeded

28. Though some ideas are inspired.
O reviver of a nation's soul

29. When our bodies lacked all spirit!
You united their disunity, and they became

30. A single hand with you the sword.
Among them religion's sanctities are preserved

31. And they are bound by ties of brotherhood.
You dealt with People of the Book

32. According to pacts of protection and care.
Your conscience is piety, your outward self guidance,

33. Your deeds kindness and favor.
Justice, compassion, nobility, fatherly care -

34. For orphans you were the best father.
Truly, existence was graced with your essence,

35. Adorning the bosom of time with a medal.
Were it not for extremes, I'd say your loss

36. Forbids those who visit you from worldliness.
History will gather from your traces

37. Chapters whose pages are perfect.
Honored by your blessed self is the earth

38. Rightfully deserving esteem and respect.
By God! your soul is sacred

39. And souls, say the reverent, are of varying ranks.
Happy in life with the imamate your rank,

40. Happy in death with Heaven your abode.
May excellent rewards greet the dean of reformers -
