1. In you I find welcome, O companion of delight,
An apparition I tend to with loving care.

2. Traversing the darkness of night on its neck,
Your radiant life lighting its way.

3. Revive me with your greetings,
I met them with yearning lips.

4. What beauty did that lovely vision impart,
Adorning me with its graceful face.

5. I clung to its slender waist as a branch
That makes the full moon seem subservient.

6. Sweet is lingering in its embrace through the night,
Intoxicated with the wine of its bosom.

7. It smiles gently, cooling ardour,
Blending honey into passion’s wine.

8. Bestowing favours upon its lovers,
Adorning them with gardenia’s white.

9. In sun, moon, and garden flowers
Are found its match and likeness.

10. Beauty fashioned it to its fancy,
None can change or alter its mould.

11. The black tresses, when in view,
My heart ransoms with all its fortune.

When the gazelle takes aim straightly,

13. None can evade its sure arrows.
O heart! Why do you insist on these passions?

14. Have you not had your fill of torment?
Take delight when the morning breeze blows,

15. Stirring the meadows and groves.
Recall those you knew before and weep in sorrow -

16. For the lover, remembering is agony.
No solace is found in its abandonment,

17. No peace without the beloved's presence.
You fed me, O love, from your hand,

18. Quenching my songs with your wine.
What bliss I found in you! Our life was sweet,

19. Though now that dream has faded.
An era in which we attained our wishes, now gone -

20. Leaving us to yearn for its return.
If not for days with lasting joy,

21. It was but a fleeting vision of delight.
Yet we were blessed with a time

22. Ruled by the just Sultan we follow.
Abdul Hamid the revered King,

23. Exalted by God with special favour.
A Caliph spreading guidance’ light,

24. His life radiating to all people.
Surpassing earth’s kings in judgment and care,

25. They cannot match his treatment of subjects.
Guarding the empire’s dignity in his might,

26. Each lion in awe of his prowess.
When the white swords clash, they turn red

27. Dyed with the blood of defeated foes.
Fate is bent to his will,

28. His command restrains and spurs its tide.
Bestowing bounty, orchards bear fruit,

29. Comfort and ease from his gardens spread.
O you who shake the glory of empire,

30. Leaving us confused in our praises of you!
With your rise our fortune dawned,

31. Your greatness evident till we acknowledged it.
Honoured by your gift, like an aloof beauty

32. None could match you as worthy of her.
She accepted as yearning pulled her

33. To a man whose company was treasured.
Finding peace when reminded of him,

34. As if she had long loved him before.
Staying by his side she blossomed,

35. The glory of royalty adorning her neck.
Refined, delighting in his words,

36. Her ears and mouth conveying them.
Of luminous Hashimite ancestry,

37. Gleaming like brilliant stars.
Pure seed of the victorious ruler,

38. Carried high on the shoulders of Al-Jawza.
You guaranteed the land’s fertility,

39. Your rain making the earth verdant.
The garden bloomed with flowers

40. Thanking you for your blessings.
The coursing floods are shamed by your munificence,

41. Abashed by your unmatched generosity.
If your days had preceded Hatim’s

42. His famed generosity would be but a day compared.
Passionate for good works when unable

43. To taste any sweetness from this life.
When fate complained, we hailed you,

44. When it turned, we sought you for relief.
We call upon you openly, so call upon

45. A man whose eyes are awake when people sleep.
O moon of gatherings, sun of exaltation,

46. Star of destiny, and its refuge.
Had I joined the ranks of poets,

47. Pearls of sky and pairing stars,
I could not fully thank your gift,

48. Or the kindness your gentle manner brought me.
My good opinion of you, my lord,

49. Is for the warmth with which you receive it.
Let not your care, after ardour's time,

50. Be like the love whose ways we knew.
