1. The stranger is not strange to Syria or Yemen,
Indeed the stranger is strange to the grave and shroud.

2. Indeed the stranger has a right due to his estrangement,
Upon the settled ones in homelands and dwellings.

3. Do not rebuke a stranger during his estrangement,
Time will rebuke him with humiliation and tribulation.

4. My journey is far and my provisions will not take me far enough,
And my strength is diminished and death seeks me.

5. And I have remnants of sins I do not know,
God knows them, in private and openly.

6. How forgiving is God that He delayed me,
And I persisted in my sin and He veils me.

7. The hours of my days pass without regret,
Neither crying nor fear nor sorrow.

8. It is I who closes the doors exerting effort,
On sins while God's eye watches me.

9. O slip committed in negligence that is gone,
O regret remaining in the heart burning me.

10. Let me moan over myself and mourn it,
And cut off fate with the reminder and grief.

11. Stop blaming me, O you who used to blame me,
If you knew what was within me you would excuse me.

12. Let me wipe tears that have no end,
Perhaps a lesson from them will save me.

13. It is as if I am among a group lying prostrate,
On the death bed and their hands tossing me.

14. And they gathered around me, some crying for me,
Some weeping over me, grieving and mourning me.

15. And they brought a doctor to treat me,
But I did not see medicine today benefit me.

16. My struggle intensified and death started pulling it
From every vein without gentleness or ease.

17. And it extracted the soul from me with its gargling,
And my saliva became bitter when it gargled me.

18. And they closed my eyes, and all left and turned away
After despairing, and were quick to shroud me.

19. And he whose love of people was swift came
Towards the washer to come wash me.

20. And he said, "O people, we need a skillful,
Free, refined, knowledgeable, and wise washer."

21. So a man from them came and stripped me
Of clothes and revealed me and separated me.

22. And they laid me on boards stretched out
And the trickling of water above me started cleaning me.

23. And he poured water over me and washed me
Three times and called the people for the shroud.

24. And they dressed me in clothes with no sleeve,
And my provision became my spices when they perfumed me.

25. And they took me out of the world, what a pity,
Upon a departure with no provision to take me far.

26. And four men carried me on their shoulders,
And behind me were those escorting me.

27. And they presented me to the prayer niche and left
Behind the imam who then prayed and bade me farewell.

28. They prayed over me a prayer with no bowing or prostration,
Perhaps God will have mercy upon me.

29. And they lowered me into my grave slowly,
And sent forward one of them to lay me to rest.

30. And he uncovered my face to look at me
And poured tears from his eyes drowning me.

31. So he stood up determined, in a collected state,
And lined the bricks above me and left me.

32. And said, "Cover him with earth and make good
Use of the reward from the Benevolent, The Bestower."

33. In the darkness of the grave, no mother is there,
Nor a compassionate father or brother to befriend me.

34. Alone and lonesome in the grave, what a pity,
Upon the separation without deeds to provision me.

35. And an image appeared before my eye when it saw
The awfulness of the emergence of what had frightened me.

36. Of Munkar and Nakeer, what can I say to them?
Their matter had confused me, frightening me.

37. And they made me sit up and were harsh in questioning me,
I have no one but You, my God, to save me.

38. So bestow upon me, my hope, a pardon from You,
For I am tied down by sins, mortgaged.

39. The family divided my wealth after they left,
And my burden was placed on my back overburdening me.

40. And my wife replaced me with another husband instead of me,
And made him judge over the money and dwelling.

41. And she made my son a servant to serve him,
And my wealth became permitted to them without price.

42. So do not let the world and its adornments deceive you,
And look at what it did to the people and homeland.

43. And look to the one who contained the whole world,
Did he leave except shroud and coffin?

44. Take contentment from your world and be satisfied with it,
Even if you had nothing but comfort of body.

45. O planter of good, you harvest fruit after it,
O planter of evil, dependent on weakness.

46. O soul, restrain from disobedience and earn
A good deed, perhaps God will have mercy upon me.

47. O soul, woe to you, repent and do good,
Perhaps you may be rewarded after death with good.

48. And praise be to God as we enter the evening and morning,
Wherever lightning flashed in Syria or Yemen.

49. Then prayers upon the Chosen One, our Master,
With goodness, pardon, benevolence and grace.
