1. How many a proud hen struts with affected gait
In the dust-yard, and deems she a mortal elates!
١. كَمْ هَامَةٍ تَمْشِي اخْتِيَالاً فِي بَطَرْ
لاَحَتْ فَظَنُّوا أَنَّ صَاحِبَهَا بَشَرْ
2. And, like Hud's folk, when the mist they saw rise,
As he climbed toward the valley, cried, "Yonder a cloud
٢. وَكَقَوْمِ هُودٍ إِذْ رَأَوْهُ عَارِضاً
مُسْتَقْبِلَ الوَادِي فَقَالُوا ذَا مَطَرْ
3. That betokens we soon shall have rain from the skies!"
Though bright the glass ring, no gem may remain there;
٣. قَدْ يَلْمَعُ الذَّهَبِيُّ لَكِنْ هَلْ هُمَا
صِنْوَانِ أَعْشَابُ المَزَابِلِ وَالشَّجَرْ
4. Tis but fool's gold. And so are the hopes of despair.
Su'ad is gone! Woe, Kauthar, thy dwelling lies bare
٤. بَانَتْ سُعَادٌ وَيْحَ كَعْبٍ بَعْدَمَا
بَانَتْ وَلَمْ يُدْرِكْ مُحَيَّاهَا الأَثَرْ
5. Since emptied of her! Nor stone shows of palace or pyre.
In our hearts enshrined she abides. The slow rain in time
٥. فِينَا وَفَاءٌ سَوْفَ يُدْنِي غَيْثَنَا
مِنْ بَعْدِ تَقْتِيرٍ وَإِنْ طَالَ السَّفَرْ
6. Will freshen the meadow though long be the drouth we must bear.
What horsemen, their steeds at the wartime left bare,
٦. كَمْ فَارِسٍ مُتَرَجِّلٍ نَحْوَ الوَغَى
يَطْوِي غُبَارَ السَّهْلِ يَلْهُو بِالخَطَرْ
7. Careered o'er the desert, no peril there daunting!
While slinking poltroons by each postern repair
٧. وَبَقَايَا أَشْبَاهِ الرِّجَالِ تَوَاثَبُوا
نَحْوَ المَنَافِذِ يَبْحَثُونَ عَنِ المَفَرّ
8. Seeking safety. Of heroes is valor the vaunting.
Though spurned, we bide constant. High over us tower
٨. جَمَحَتْ بِنَا الفَرَسُ الذَّلُولَةُ وَاعْتَلَى
الأَوْبَاشُ قُرْصَ الشَّمْسِ وَاغْتَالُوا القَمَرْ
9. The banners of virtue. Stern destinies lower,
But we shall endure. Your day and your hour!
٩. العَصْرُ عَصْرُكُمُ فَتِيهُوا وَارْقُبُوا
فَالصُّبْحُ آتٍ وَالمَدَى لَنْ يَنْدَحِرْ
10. On guard then, ye brave, for the Morn shall soon flower.
The shameful may weary, but we shall remain.
١٠. حَتَّى وَإِنْ مِلْنَا سَنَبْقَى وَالعُلاَ
سَيْفَيْنِ تَخْشَانَا تَصَارِيفُ القَدَرْ
