1. She spent the night as she spent it, pregnant,
Having a wound next to her teat, festering,
١. وبَاتَت كَمَا بَاتَت مَهَاهُ حَميلَةً
لَهَا جُؤذَرٌ عِنَدًَ الصَّرَاةِ عَقِيرُ
2. And her ribs were eaten away as if
She were divided at the cooking pots, slaughtered.
٢. وقَد أُكِلَت أَشلاَؤُهُ فَكَأَنَّهَا
مُقَسَّمَةٌ عِندَ القِدَاحِ جَزُورُ
3. She moaned from her yearning like the mother of an only child,
To whom the sound of glass was allowed, tinkling.
٣. كَمَا بَغَمَت مِن شَجوِهَا أُمُّ وَاحِدٍ
أُتِيحَ لَهَا مِثلَ الزُّجَاجِ طَرِيرُ
4. From early morning till the sun of her day had set
With bleating and whistling in both temples.
٤. لَدُن غُدوَةُ حَتَّى صَغَت شَمسُ يَومِهَا
وَفِي أبهَرَيهَا رَنَّةٌ وَزَفِيرُ
5. She pushes away his robe from the toil of his neck,
As if the sinews of blood were perfumed.
٥. تَسُوفُ ثَرَاهُ عَن مَشَقِّ إِهَابِهِ
كَأَنَّ أَسَابِيَّ الدِّمَاءِ عَتيرُ
