1. I endowed vines with the beauties
That were donned upon paintings

2. I adopted the scholar's doctrine for them
How could I deviate from the wise man's purpose?

3. The excellence of grapes over dates
Is that musk permeates the breeze

4. In every heart, love for it is renewed
When worries' rust is polished from it

5. And I yearned for pleasures in the old palace
As in ancient times

6. When I'm thirsty, my cup is handed to me
As amber is returned to the weanling babe

7. I did not get speech from silent ruins
As if it had the gestures of the conversant

8. Rather, I got speech from a lute
That awoke melodiously in a maiden's lap

9. The drowsiness of the sleepy intoxicated me
I dispelled sleep from the companion with it

10. The morn's eyelid was still
A remainder of the ignorant night's stupor

11. As if the dawn was an adversary confronting its gloom
A foe who lengthens against an enemy

12. As if the east in this and that
Were ranks in which there was a black man and a Roman

13. A night whose radiance of dawn was split
Like pitch darkening for a ruthless attack

14. We travelled under its darkness in the wild
With bare bones devoid of flesh

15. And we mapped its smooth paths
Drawing them in parts with the feather pen

16. We circled the lands in a circling of people
Who rest their bodies from the toil of flesh

17. And we lodged in Ibn Abbad's melody
Having attained purpose at determination

18. Whereby the gaze of kings is lowered
Who revere the majesty of the great king

19. Ranks are organized under him
That you would think them stars to the stars

20. And favors flow from his fingers
That you would think them clouds to the clouds

21. And wishes emanate from the dew of his hand
If they reached him confused, without confusion

22. If the generous forget, memory awakens
Traveling in the mouth of lasting time

23. His insight's intimacy converses with him
About what is in the heart's concealment

24. So O son of prey, from Lakhm and Lakhm
With hereditary stellar fortunes' rising places

25. When they are generous, favors' flashes
And when forbearing, mellowness' reassurances

26. In your right hand is honored
Your dispensing it preserves the inviolable

27. And a heated battlefield which spears met
A lethal enemy, the enemy's soul

28. It lurked in darkness and fled in fright
With a quaking that split my hearing, wronged

29. And it tasted through Joseph militancy's woes
So he made the blissful anguish pass him

30. Serpents of eminence had torn at him
Ask the safe night about the safe

31. Your oneness of God folds its Trinity
To bite the hands of great terror

32. It saw you smiling like a false friend
It yawned away from it with curses

33. The next day it came with crucifixes that misled
Obstinate foes concocted a cunning scheme

34. As if they were devils, but
You hurled them into the inferno of stars

35. Obstinacy, its war shirt is iron
The passing breeze conveys it

36. Misguided ones lead them in their time
So woe to the misguided!

37. It cultivated the growth of thorns through them, so they flourished
Those are the consequences of fateful pasture

38. And it led them to meadows in the meadows
With the lethal water of dense clouds

39. And when Ad people came to you
You came with the barren wind'sPredicate

40. You provoked war's fire until
Its gasps etched Hell's pieces

41. With the floundering of its flames, darkness rose
Shedding the honorable's gown over the honorable

42. So the sky's robe is dusty at the fringes
And the earth's face is red-dyed cloth

43. The heated spear points were intoxicated until
Every straight, supple palm tree swayed

44. I have drunk only the wine of aspiration
And radiated only the roses' nectar

45. So pray to your worshipped Lord and sacrifice
Flocks from them after the flocks

46. Celebrate with guidance and prepare upon them
The torment of war with painful agony

47. Are those smiles of dawn from Habbab
Or carnelian atop which a pearl is strung?

48. Is it obscurity to radiance adjoining
Or camphor sealed with musk?

49. Dew in the flowers or the water of love
Boiling in eyes of houris who did not sleep?

50. The pillar of dawn in darkness, or
The first glow in the dusty cloud?

51. A woman or an everlasting pond
Whose skin is bristled with hailstones?

52. The morning breeze dictated it in order, but did not
Lift its hand from it until it was detached

53. It settled the hearts of ruins
Fate wove over it and patched

54. Its deeds opposed its lifespans
So its strength came after old age

55. So if you quench it in the winery, it is
Flowing fire, kindled water

56. Eons exhausted an essence from it
Save the indivisible portion

57. It is of what exceeded in delicacy
You find ether in it though it is non-existence

58. Drinking from its cups attains
Only a color that hastens drunkenness and smearing

59. As if the sun in its vessel
Is blackened pitch in a garment of darkness

60. So turn to the soul a sister, and grapes
A daughter, and the spirit's bliss a mother

61. It is a key to the selves for us
And the Victorious' hand is the key to generosity

62. A king unlocked the castle of glory through it
Glory began with him, then was sealed

63. In his grasp crouches a lion
And crescent, cloud, and banner

64. He leaves vengeance aside
And when punishing, punishes for God's sake

65. And if he says "yes"—that being his habit—
He bestows bountifully with bestowal of bounty

66. Of hands that were connected through hands
Like succeeding rains after rain

67. And if the cloud is miserly with downpour
And if fate scowls with cheerlessness

68. The elite are chosen as honored, but when
They approach him, they become servants

69. I know not which right hand was kissed
In its surrender, or the receiver

70. The tyrant panics of him, so on
A lip he walks to him, without foot

71. The solver of concerns when war stirred
The sparks of war when it intended resolve

72. Whenever he pressed a difficult war
Zeal blazed and the assailant ignited

73. And if he attempted to stab the kidneys
God deflected the piercer like the pen

74. He tramples the resolves that he undid
With an inspiration for enemies voracious

75. He turns night to day with prey
And restores noon with spears lodged

76. The radiance of falling stars in his bow
And he makes noon a loan in sheaths

77. Only the roaring of a lion whose
Dens within are still serene

78. Every brave heart, awe-inspiring
Choice of morals, praiseworthy traits

79. They take shade in the leaves of prey
While the awe's flames within them ignite

80. And a bride I gifted you
At which enviers are silenced by the word

81. In its small pearls, if they try
To gather them, they are wise sayings

82. Nations strike parables with you forever
After nations, in praise

83. I settled your mention as eternal wisdom
Its structure forever undestructive
