7. From where can I hope to gain her peace
When war rages between her youth and my old age?

8. No sun you love sets in the horizon
Of stars that rose without setting

A cousin is not fit for his like

10. Why does he recite love poetry to me
His first was not admonition from a preacher?

11. O she, I called repeatedly
So you would answer me, but you did not respond

12. If only my poem had shamed him
The beauty of your attention is mercy to the sorrowful

With perfume made from that drawing out

In the sea a blow more painful than the struck

20. Guardian of the truth, just, in his land
No sheep fears the enmity of a wolf

21. A king who made the feast a joyous celebration
The elite gathered around him in droves

22. He came to prayer in magnificent majesty
And awe-inspiring composure and leaning posture

23. Like eagles swooping down on the feet of enemies
In a sky in which lions of war prowl

24. The banner was bound to one of awe
Suitable to be honored, well-mannered

25. Doves circle the domes peacefully
Floating ships with helms and sterns

26. From every towering camel saddle
He conveyed their steps in order

27. As if their ships sail on the pasture’s bloom
An irrigated meadow of sprouting greenery

28. With gazelles like virgins, whose running
Reached, with twigs and acacia trees

29. From every shortcut through the wilderness urgently
As if it were the concise word of a literary man

30. It grazes the horizon with a mouth, and its vigor
Grazes from a carved outflow of water

31. With a gaze between the eyelids like anxious hearts
Of enemies, frowning and turning away

32. From all who unfurl over the horizon of clamor
His unfurling is like an unbound book

33. The she-camels came to groom him with their chewing
And the wind shakes off his dusty coating

34. Or every serpent bound to a bracelet
Among gems like a snarling, angry one

35. Forms were stripped bare in the desert, so I imagined
Life in them with a shape and clothes

36. They opened their mouths wide but their jaws
Were empty of tongues and fangs

37. From every figure that inhales from its scent
A spirit that stirs its body with its blowing

38. You see the she-ostriches shake their plumage
In a startled fluttering for the storks

39. The seeds of the two holy sites departed and migrated
To nest far from it in India

40. With steeds like virgins whose continuous battle
Is ever against your battled enemy

41. Of every rose whose color rivals it
Except the blush of the cheek of the beloved

42. As if the reserve of its freedom hoarded
The gleam of the sea in its waves

43. Or dark gray whose darkness dyes even
The crow with its gloomy color

44. Its leg ornaments are pearls on turquoise
Gleaming for the touch of the cross

45. It gallops and has no shadow, as if
It were lightning! How fit for lightning is such a steed!

46. Or fiery like a shooting star and its barrage
Assailing the follower with burning flames

47. No difference between dawn and it
Except nearing and nearing at its approach

48. Or yellow like saffron, changed
By the blackness of a forelock from the black of youth

49. Or aflame with a color in which a flame kindles
Fueled by its blowing wind

50. As if it were a boulder hurled down
By a violently surging torrent

51. As if the bay were drunk on its color
Wandering tipsily in its gait

52. As if the sharpness of its gaze and spirit
Were created in the ear and tendon of its foreleg

53. The ornaments of its tack glittered over their saddles
Like lamps shining with flames

54. Their lightness of fine gold sprang from them
Vigorously adorned with trinkets

55. As if a necklace were fashioned for every distinguished one
Molded from every sun

56. You prayed, then followed the way of Ahmad
Slaughtering every honorable and respected one

57. From every high-saddled one, it carried
Glory and temptation on it

58. Where dew in its plenty is bestowed
By an outstretched, withdrawn palm

59. O you whose rhymes fear his criticism!
They are refined, scrubbed clean

60. No place remains in the world but this one
Where praise flows to the composers

61. Take them, bride of gatherings, unveiled
Except in your higher than high dress

62. The pearls that adorned you only emerged
From diving deep in the nearby seas

63. As for my vocabulary daughters, they
Outshine beloved daughters in beauty

64. None shall marry the virgin but the glorious one
Who remains in her chastity like an aloof gazelle

65. I am the father of the beautiful and charming one if
I am estranged, for estrangement is not strange to me

66. The Hajj pilgrims call for you in their talbiyah
And cries of “Labbayk” in glorification

67. From every unkempt pilgrim who reaches Mina
With wishes, attaining what is sought

68. Crying in Mecca and the Hajj crowds, repeating
And in Medina invoking without cease

69. So you remained lofty to annihilate the enemy
And enrich the poor and relieve the worried
