My nights lengthened with worries of settled folk

1. My nights lengthened with worries of settled folk,
And my head grayed the day the battle of Hajir occurred.

2. By my life - and my life has not been easy on me -
No good luck accompanies me like further ruin.

3. Indeed Kurz gained at Hajir a battle
That sufficed his people from other long dark nights,

4. So may God bless the eyes of whoever saw a youth like him,
Kurz son of Amer struck him with a spear.

5. O tribesmen of Dhubyan, weep for your pillar
With every tender-skinned white sword,

6. And every soft-hoofed, prick-eared horse
Bending with a saddle like a blossoming carnelian,

7. And every tender-cheeked swift-going one as though he were
A stallion with a docked tail and castrated flesh.

8. And if you do not make the people a morning raid
Of which a later arrival tells the tale,

9. And throw Uqail what comes after which there is no
Survival, then be like sheltered slave-girls.
