She wondered at my dress when she saw me,

عجبت من بزتي إذ أخلقت

1. She wondered at my dress when she saw me,
Wearing a robe embroidered and lined with silk.

١. عَجِبَت مِن بِزَّتي إِذ أخلَقَت
وَهيَ تَجتَابُ الحَبِيرَ المُغدَفَا

2. Do not wonder, O maid, at this,
For before it was dressed in pearls and shells.

٢. هَذِهِ لا تَعجَبِي من هَذِهِ
قَبلَهَا أُلبِسَ دُرٌّ صَدَفَا

3. Think not that time has robbed me,
But that it has stripped from me a splendid dress.

٣. لا تَظُنِّي الدَّهرَ لِي مُستَلِباً
إِنَّما جَرَّدَ مِنِّي مُرهَفَا

4. The water that filled its sleeves
Old age has dried up and it faded away.

٤. إنَّ ماءً كان في وَجنَتِها
وَرَدَتهُ السِّنُّ حَتَّى نشَفا

5. The stalks have withered from her fingers,
But the nights will renew and restore it again.

٥. وَذَوَى العُنَّابُ من أَنمُلِها
فَأَعَادَتهُ اللَّيالي حَشَفا
